Buy Yorkshire Terrier

A Yorkshire Terrier is a small dog breed within the type of terrier. Did you know that the breed is one of the smallest dogs? It is actually considered to be the smallest dog in the world and is only the size of a closed hand.

Origin and history

The Yorkshire Terrier was created in Yorkshire, England, which is England's largest county with Leeds and Sheffield as the largest cities. It was created in the middle of the 19th century, ie. around the 1850s. The aim was to create a breed that could help the working class to fight rats at home, but also in workplaces such as mine skates, wool factories, etc. Others believe that the dog was bred as a companion dog for the middle class, which did not have the space to keep large dogs, but who would like a companion anyway.

When there was no longer the same need for dogs to kill rats, the dog became popular as a show dog. Here, the poor workers could instead earn good money by breeding the breed, which the upper class then bought as show dogs and companion dogs. The fine ladies from the nobility were especially fond of the dog. It is especially in connection with the dog's time as a show dog that it has got its long coat. The original Yorkshire Terrier, which was used as a rat killer did not have the same long coat, and was also significantly larger than the Yorkshire Terrier we know today.

The breed was officially recognized in 1886 and is one of the most popular miniature dogs in all of Britain today.

Appearance and characteristics

The Yorkshire Terrier is a very small dog breed, with a height of only approx. 15 to 25 cm and a body weight of max 3 kg. One of the breed's most characteristic features is the coat, which is long, fine and soft and without undercoat. It therefore does not shed, but must be cut if you do not want the coat to be too long.

Due to its lack of undercoat, it also tends to freeze in winter, so it may be a good idea to buy a small coat for it. When you see people dressing up their Yorkshire Terrier, it's not only for fun, but also because the breed otherwise freezes when it's cold outside. If you do not cut the dog's bangs, you can also put a small elastic band in its hair, so that the hair does not smoke down in front of the eyes.

If you want it to have upright ears, which for most people are the most charming, and what looks most "awake", then you should trim the hair on the ears while the dog is a puppy, as the hair will otherwise weigh the ears down so that they do not stand upright.

Behavior and mentality

A Yorkshire Terrier is a classic terrier; it is stubborn and determined, but also brave and has a bit of a temperament. Thus, it is not afraid of other dogs, even if they are significantly larger than itself. A Yorkshire Terrier can easily dominate than much larger dogs.

On the other hand, the Yorkshire Terrier is also a very intelligent dog who easily and quickly learns commands and tricks. It is also a dog that loves to cuddle with its owner. If you sit on the sofa, it will love to get up and lie on your lap in the meantime.

Fur care and hygiene

A Yorkshire Terrier requires a lot of fur care. On the one hand, the coat must be brushed regularly, preferably daily, so as not to entangle. The coat must also be trimmed so that you avoid the coat becoming too long. You can do it yourself or you can go to the dog groomer. In addition, a Yorkshire Terrier may also tend to pee a little on itself when out and about. This is because its hair is so long that it can not actually avoid it.

Finally, the Yorkshire Terrier may have a tendency to have bad teeth, which i.a. due to the fact that they are not so good at using them. They rather swallow their food. Therefore, feel free to give the dog some chewing bones or other treats that require a little work, where it is forced to use its teeth.
