Buy White Shepherd

A White Shepherd is a dog breed that originates from the classic German Shepherd. The breed is relatively new and rare in the UK, although it has existed for many years. The White Shepherd is not considered a variant of the classic golden-red German Shepherd, but rather an independent breed. It is also called the White Swiss Shepherd Dog.

Origin and history

The White Shepherd has been around as long as the traditional golden red German Shepherd. But the White Shepherds were considered discolored and false German Shepherds, which is why they were often killed or sold without pedigree. Over time, however, various dog breeders have worked to get the White Shepherd recognized as an independent breed. In 1985, they succeeded, when the UCI (United Kennel Clubs International) as the first dog organization accepted the breed and a common breed standard for the breed was approved.

However, the first White Shepherd came to Denmark before that, namely in 1974. Five years later, the association White Shepherd Club Denmark was founded. At the time, there were only 22 dogs registered in the club. The number is significantly higher today, although the breed is still not so widespread. In 199, the breed changed its name and was instead named White Shepherd and that name changed again to White Swiss Shepherd Dog in 2003. However, many still call the breed, the White Shepherd.

It is said that the breed, due to its white color, was a popular shepherd dog in the past, when the wolf had difficulty distinguishing the dog from the sheep. At the same time, the White Shepherd could hide in flocks of sheep and protect it from thieves.

Appearance and characteristics

The standard of the breed has changed over time. For the first many years, a male should be between 62.5 and 67.5 cm tall and weigh between 38 and 43 kg, while a much larger difference in ideal weight is allowed today. Thus, a male must today weigh between 34 and 40 kg. The females are typically slightly smaller in both shoulder height and weight.

The White Shepherd has a long and strong coat, which must be completely white. The body is balanced and harmonious and can appear absolutely majestic due to the beautiful fur. The breed must not be thinly built, but must appear strong and have a proud appearance. The eyes are medium-sized, almond-shaped and dark. The ears are highly set and give the impression that the dog is very alert.

Mentality and behavior

Some people think that with a White Shepherd, you just get a German Shepherd with a white coat. But that is now far from the case. There are several differences in the behavior, temperament and mentality of the two races. The White Shepherd can, like the traditional German Shepherd, be trained to perform a wide range of tasks. Therefore, the dog is used in several countries as both a police and military dog as well as as a service dog, companion dog, rescue dog and working dog. The many uses of the breed are due to its great willingness to cooperate as well as high intelligence.

The White Shepherd generally has a gentle and friendly mind. It is open to strangers, but without being overbearing or intrusive. The breed is therefore well suited as a family dog where it handles children easily and without problems. Finally, a White Shepherd can also be used as a watchdog, where it will probably alert the family if there are uninvited guests.

Fur care

With its long beautiful coat, it also comes with a lot of fur care. The breed has a strong, insulating undercoat and a long, smooth outer coat. Therefore, it should be brushed regularly to remove dead hair and avoid tangling. You must also be prepared for it to shed a lot.

A well-groomed White Shepherd, on the other hand, is a beautiful sight that turns many heads when it walks by.
