West Highland White Terrier

A West Highland White Terrier is a small dog breed within the type of terrier. The breed originates from Scotland, where it i.a. was used to catch foxes. Today, however, they are extremely rarely used for hunting, but are instead used as companion and family dogs.

Origin and history

The West Highland White Terrier originates from Scotland, where it, along with a number of other terrier breeds, was used to fight rodents and other pests, such as rats, mice, foxes and more. Back then, however, the breed was not white as it is today, but rather red like foxes.

Legend has it that a colonel named E.D. Malcolm, during a fox hunt in 1907, came to shoot his own West Highland White Terrier because he confused it with a fox. In grief over what he had done, he decided that in future the breed should only be bred in the color white, so that similar accidents would never happen again. For more than 60 years, E.D. Malcolm bred West Highland White Terrier and the result was the breed as we know it today. E.D. Malcolm is therefore considered the original creator of the breed. Today, the breed is one of the world's most popular family dogs.

Appearance and characteristics

A West Highland White Terrier is a small dog that is approx. 28 cm tall and weighs between 7 and 10 kg. There is no difference in size between males and females. The coat is white and consists of both an outer coat and an undercoat. The outer coat is coarse and rough, while the undercoat is short and downy.

The dog looks a bit like a small teddy bear with its beautiful white fur and deep, dark eyes. However, the coat is not quite as soft as it seems, but rather a little rougher. The white fur comes from the fact that the hunter should be able to see the dog in the field, so he did not get to confuse it with a fox. In addition to the snow-white fur, one of the most important characteristics of the breed is the naturally erect ears.

Behavior and mentality

A West Highland White Terrier is extremely rarely used as a hunting dog to this day, but rather more as a family and companion dog. However, there is still a bit of the dog's hunting instincts left in it. For example, it loves to examine everything around it, and once it starts exploring the unknown, its hearing may fail a little.

Although a West Highland White Terrier is a small dog, it needs some exercise, preferably in a place where it can be allowed to run around freely. However, it can be an advantage to build a fence in the garden as it loves to go exploring. Because of its past as a hunting dog, the breed is a brave, energetic, robust and hardy dog. And like so many other terrier breeds, it has a charming audacity and stubbornness. Once a terrier has said no, it's hard to convince it otherwise.

West Highland White Terrier as a family dog

A West Highland White Terrier is also an excellent family dog, and gets along well with the family's children. It therefore easily falls into most families and due to its modest size, it can easily thrive in an apartment, for example. The breed is also quite vigilant, and it will probably make the whole family aware if strangers are coming. It may therefore be a bit barking.

It can be an advantage to train obedience with the dog as early as possible, as it otherwise can be very stubborn and determined. Once a West Highland White Terrier is an adult, it is difficult to raise. On the other hand, a well-behaved West Highland White Terrier can do really well at dog competitions such as agility and obedience tests.
