A Welsh Springer Spaniel is a dog breed within the Spaniel family that originates from Wales. The breed is a hunting dog, which is known for its cheerful and devoted mind as well as great hunting joy.
It is not known exactly where and when the Welsh Springer Spaniel originated, but it is believed to have existed in Wales for many hundreds of years. Before the breed originated, however, a similar dog breed was known as the Land Spaniel, which shares many characteristics with the Welsh Springer Spaniel. This one has been around since the late 16th century and it is believed that the Welsh Springer Spaniel originates from this breed. The Welsh Springer Spaniel was used as both a hunting dog and to drive cattle and herd sheep. The breed is a so-called "starter" hunting dog, which means that it should only hunt the game up, but not retrieve after the shot. The breed masters this discipline to perfection.
The breed was recognized by the English Kennel Club as an official breed in 1902. Before that, it was equated with the English Springer Spaniel, which it is undoubtedly related to, but which is a different breed. However, the two breeds are often mixed today as well, even though they are two different dogs.
The Welsh Springer Spaniel is a small to medium-sized dog that is approx. 46 to 48 cm tall and weighs between 16 and 20 kg. The males are slightly larger than the females. The breed is relatively compact and solidly built, and can withstand many hours of hard work. It is also a breed that loves to work and should preferably be "used" every day. The breed is only available in one approved color, which is white with warm chestnut red markings. The markings do not have to have a specific pattern. The coat is straight and dense and has a silky structure. The coat must not be rough or wavy. Curly fur is also undesirable.
The Welsh Springer Spaniel is a very active and energetic breed, which is why it takes both patience and experience to raise it. It is recommended that you go to dog training with the dog from the time it is a puppy, so that it learns to listen, especially if you are not an experienced dog owner.
However, the breed becomes significantly more subdued and calm as it gets older, but as a youngster, it is an energy level that requires a lot of activation and stimulation. The breed tends to attach a lot to its family, which it will follow around the home and like to sleep with if allowed. It may therefore be a little difficult to be alone at home. This is something you have to train.
Although the Welsh Springer Spaniel is a distinct hunting dog, it can also easily work really well as a family dog. You do not necessarily have to go hunting to own a Welsh Springer Spaniel, but it is a great advantage if you live an active life so that the dog can use his energy every day. The breed is really fond of children, although it is not particularly interested in strangers. It also works well as a watchdog, as it will probably bark and alert the family if it hears sounds that sound suspicious. However, it is important that the dog is socialized from the time it is a puppy, as it may otherwise well risk becoming shy towards strangers.
Generally, the Welsh Springer Spaniel has very good health, but in rare cases suffers from underdeveloped hip socket (hip dysplasia). In addition, it is relatively easy for the breed to get ear and eye infections. The dog's fur should be brushed through at least once a week, and preferably trimmed 3-4 times a year. The most important care of the dog, however, is that it gets enough exercise, meaning being activated and stimulated on a daily basis.
