Buy Pembroke Welsh Corgi

A Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a breed of shepherd dog. It is, unlike a Pembroke Welsh Corgi, which is the second type of Welsh corgi, smaller and with more pointed ears. It is also often born blunt-tailed.

Origin and history

The two types of Welsh corgi, Pembroke and Cardigan, share roughly the same origins and history. In the 11th century, both breeds were already referred to as being shepherd and cattle dogs, which were used to drive the animals to and from the fields by the Welsh cattle farmers. It is believed that the Pembroke Welsh Corgi arose when the Welsh corgis were mixed with Nordic point dogs, which Scandinavian Vikings brought with them. However, it is not known for sure how the breed originated.

For many years, the two corgi types were considered to be two varieties of the same breed, but later, in 1943, they were chosen to be separated, so that they are now two individual breeds. Both the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Welsh Corgi Cardigan have been used for centuries by Welsh farmers, both to herd cattle but also to guard and protect the family and farms. Both Corgi types are experiencing increasing popularity in the UK in recent years. In particular, the Welsh Corgi Cardigan is very common, while Pembroke continues to be more rare.

Appearance and characteristics

A Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a low-legged dog breed with short legs, a long body and pointed ears. The face is a bit like a fox. They are 25 to 30 cm tall and weigh between 10 and 12 kg. The males and females are equal in size. They are available in a variety of colors, such as solid red, black and tan, sable and fawn. White markings on e.g. legs, chest and neck are allowed and are seen from time to time.

Welsh Corgi Pembroke is also characterized by the fact that it is often born with a very small bobtail or even no tail at all. This is a special feature of this particular type of Corgi, and is thus not shared by the Welsh Corgi Cardigan. The missing tail is probably deliberately bred due to the breed's past as a shepherd dog. Here, a long tail was a disadvantage as the animals could risk stepping on it.

Behavior and mentality

A Pembroke Welsh Corgi is an intelligent, social and attentive dog breed which, due to its past as a shepherd dog, is easy to breed and very cooperative. In addition to being used as a shepherd dog, the breed was also used as a watchdog to look after the animals and farm of the Welsh farmers. Therefore, the breed still possesses a great guard instinct to this day and would make a good watchdog that will protect its family and keep strangers away. Due to the dog's past as a watchdog, it may well be a bit barking. This is quite natural for the breed, as it is the way it warns that there is something potentially dangerous that it wants you to be aware of. In addition, the breed also used its barking when controlling herds of cattle. It is therefore completely natural for a Corgi to bark, and this is something that you can not get completely rid of.

 Fur care

A Pembroke Welsh Corgi has a very special double layer coat, which means that it can withstand virtually all kinds of weather. On the other hand, it means that it also sheds twice as much. Especially when the dog changes fur, which is twice a year, there will be a lot of hair to be found around the home. You can prevent this by brushing the dog during the periods when it sheds the most, but you must be prepared for the fact that it is a dog that sheds a lot before you get a Corgi.

Health and disease

A Pembroke Welsh Corgi is generally a healthy and fit dog breed. The dog's greatest health risk is actually being overweight, which is why it is important to be aware that the dog does not get too fat.
