The breed is best described as an extremely versatile and energetic hunting dog, which can adapt well to life in a family that loves to do a lot of outdoor activities and who knows that the breed has specific needs that must be fulfilled by its family. The breed requires exercise and meaningful employment to keep it calm and relaxed indoors. However, the dog is kind to all people it knows, but somewhat reserved and vigilant towards strangers, especially other dogs that it is not used to dealing with. Therefore, the breed needs early socialization with other people and dogs. It also needs a dog-experienced owner who is willing to give it both a friendly, consistent upbringing and a good social life, which is a must for a dog of this breed.
There are numerous theories about the origin of the breed. However, it is clear that already in the beginning of the 19th century that the breed was kept as a driving hunting dog at the court in Weimar. Later in the century, these dogs were crossed with standing chicken dogs and bred further with these crosses. The "gray ghost" is probably the only German chicken dog that has spread across most of the world. It is seen as a show dog and has also been used as a service dog for police and military. The breed is 59-70 cm with a weight of 25-40 kg.
The breed is extremely intelligent and always completely sure of the track when hunting. The breed is quite good at hunting game, as it is good at searching and retrieving killed game as it moves. It has retained the characteristics of the drifting hunting dogs and is easily tempted to roam the areas by itself, even though it otherwise maintains relatively good contact with the hunter or owner. Obedience must therefore be trained from the time it is a puppy in order to keep its tendencies to roam in check.
You can find the breed in two different varieties: There is the short-haired variety that has a strong, dense and smooth coat that is slightly longer than in many other short-haired breeds. The long-haired variety has a coat that is soft and smooth or slightly wavy. Both types have a very little undercoat. They only require regular brushing and the coat is easy to hold and does not require much care or grooming.
The breed is strong and full of power, which to that extent needs persistent training in basic obedience, as the breed can be quite dominant if the obedience is not trained.
