Buy Volpino Italiano

A Volpino Italiano is a rare dog breed of the pointed dog type, which originally comes from Italy. Volpino Italiano is Italian and means directly translated "Little Italian Fox".

History and origin

Volpino Italiano is an ancient dog breed that originated in Italy, where it can be traced all the way back to the Roman Empire, which was one of the largest empires in world history, and existed until 1453. Volpino Italiano is thus one of the world's oldest Point dogs. In the Roman Empire, and since ancient times, the dog has been used as a watchdog. However, not in the traditional sense, where it attacked strangers and outsiders, but rather as an "alarm system", where it alerted the large Mastiff dogs that there was danger ahead. Then the huge Mastiffs took care of the rest.

To this day, if you have a Volpino Italiano, you will still be able to experience that it wants to sit on window sills or other places with a good view in order to keep an eye on the area. Its past as a watchdog lies so deep within it that it simply cannot let go. Besides being a watchdog, Volpino Italiano was also used as a shepherd dog by the shepherds as well as a companion dog for especially the upper class of ancient Rome. Here the dog was used as a living decorative "decoration" due to its elegant and beautiful appearance. It is said that the world-renowned sculptor, architect and painter, Michelangelo, was a great admirer of the breed.

Although the breed was very widespread in ancient times, the popularity of the breed has been declining in recent times. In Italy, however, great efforts have been made to preserve the breed, but still to this day the Volpino Italiano is quite rare. In the UK there are only a few breeders of the breed.

Appearance and characteristics

Volpino Italiano is a very small dog breed, which is only between 25 and 30 cm tall and weighs 4 to 5 kg. However, the dog looks a little bigger than it really is, due to its large, strong and beautiful white fur. However, the breed is also available in a champagne-colored version as well as a red version, although these are very rare. In particular, the red variant does not really exist anymore.

Mentality and behavior

A Volpino Italiano is a small dog in a large body and is therefore not afraid to "play with the big" dogs. It is both fearless and hardy, and clearly does not know its own modest size. A Volpino Italiano can easily dominate dogs that are significantly larger than itself. A Volpino Italiano is generally a cheerful and happy dog that is very suitable as a family dog. It is loving, loyal and devoted to its family.

However, it is also a very lively, energetic and active breed, which can be very playful. Due to its past as a watchdog, the Volpino Italiano is naturally protective and watchful and will always alert his family if it feels there is danger ahead. A Volpino Italiano can thrive in most environments and under most conditions. And due to its modest size, it can easily be kept in an apartment, for example, as well as both in the city and in the countryside, as long as it just gets good with exercise.

Care of Volpino Italiano

Despite its strong and full-bodied coat, a Volpino Italiano does not require much fur care. A thorough brushing once a week to avoid matting is usually enough. However, during the shedding periods extra brushing may be needed. The breed does not need to be bathed very often. A bath every two months is plenty. In addition to the coat, the dog's teeth should also be inspected once in a while. Small dogs, like a Volpino Italiano, tend to get tartar easily. A dental cleaning at the vet once a year may therefore be necessary.
