Tibetan Spaniel

A Tibetan Spaniel, also called a Tibetan Temple Dog, is a dog breed that originated in Tibet. The breed has primarily been developed as a companion dog, to keep the Tibetan monks company in the temples and palaces, but the dog also had other functions here, than just a companion dog.

Origin and history

Thousands of years ago, the Tibetan Spaniel was bred by Tibetan temple monks to keep them company in their temples and palaces. At the time, however, the breed was simply called the Tibetan Temple Dog. However, the race also had other functions in the temples, including that as a lookout dog where they kept an eye out on the horizon and alerted the temples' large mastiff dog when strangers approached. The breed was also used as a lap dog by the monks, who were known to walk around with the dogs in their sleeves to warm themselves against the cold in the winter when the temples could get very cold. It is also said that the monks slept with the dogs in their beds at night where they almost functioned as small "hot water bottles" in the cold nights.

To this day, the Tibetan Spaniel still has more of its ancient instincts hidden within it. Therefore, it likes to place itself high where it can keep a lookout, e.g. a window sill or the like. And if it sees a stranger approaching, it immediately alerts the family. Although the Tibetan Spaniel is a small dog, it is a good watchdog, as it is very alert, attentive and vigilant. Later, in the 1890s, the breed came to Britain, where the name, Spaniel, was added. Since then, the breed's popularity has been steadily increasing, among other things, due to its very social and loving nature.

Appearance and characteristics

The Tibetan Spaniel is a small dog with a large, full-bodied and silky coat. It is approx. 25 cm tall and weighs between 4 and 7 kg. It is available in all colors and color combinations.

Behavior and mentality

The Tibetan Spaniel is a dog breed that was primarily bred to be a companion dog. It is therefore a dog that is very social, loving and that appreciates close contact with humans. Therefore, it is not a dog that is suitable for being alone a lot, as this will make it sad. It is a dog that forges a very close bond with its family and its owners. A Tibetan Spaniel is preferably near its family around the clock, where it is a faithful and loyal companion. People who have Tibetan Spaniels describe them as extremely loving, affectionate and always in a good mood. It is also a dog that is very tolerant of small children, which means that it is very suitable as a family dog. It is also nice and kind to all people, including strangers, although it does bark a bit when someone comes. If you acquire a Tibetan Spaniel, you must be aware that you get a dog that expects to be treated as an equal member of the family. One must also be prepared for the fact that it is a dog which, despite its size, requires a lot of activation and exercise. Fortunately, the breed is extremely happy to play.

As a roommate

The Tibetan Spaniel is incredibly easy to deal with and can adapt to most environments. In other words, it is a dog you can have whether you live in an apartment or a house.

Fur care

Due to the breed's long, beautiful fur, it is a breed that requires a lot of fur care. Fortunately, it is incredibly easy to hold, if you just remember to brush it 2-3 times a week or as needed. However, it is advantageous to brush it a little more during the shedding periods. One must be prepared for the breed to shed a lot during these periods.
