Buy Tervueren

A Tervueren is a breed of shepherd dog that originated in Belgium. It is one of a total of four variants of the breed Belgian Shepherd Dog, which all resemble each other in build, but which are different in fur type and color. The breed originated in the Belgian municipality of Tervueren, which is located in the province of Flemish Brabant in Flanders.

Origin and history

The Tervueren, like the other Belgian Shepherd Dogs, was developed in the late 1800s, by crossing different old sheepdog types. Originally there were eight different Belgian Shepherd Dogs, but there are only four left today, of which Tervueren is one of these. All the Belgian Shepherd Dogs, including the Tervueren, are known for being agile, enduring and vigilant. They are, not surprisingly, particularly suitable as shepherd and sheep dogs, but have also proven to be quite useful as service dogs for police, military and customs due to their high intelligence, obedience and that they are so easy to train. The breed has also excelled as a competition dog within i.a. agility. The first breed standard for the Tervueren was already described in 1892, but it was not until 1901 that it was first registered and recognized in the Belgian Kennel Club. In 1974, the four different variants of the Belgian Shepherd Dog were adopted, of which Tervueren is said to be one.

Appearance and characteristics

The Tervueren is a medium-sized dog with a shoulder height of approx. 56-66 cm and a weight of 27 to 29 kg. The coat is short on the head, at the ears and on the front of the legs, but relatively long on the rest of the dog's body. Especially on the neck, the coat is very long and almost forms a "mane" or "collar" around the dog. The Tervueren is available in several different colors, but is most common as golden red with black hair tips and gray undercoat. However, the head and "mane" should preferably be black regardless of the color of the rest of the coat. The tail is long with a full coat.

Mentality and behavior

The four Belgian Shepherd dogs are very similar when it comes to their mentality and behavior. All four breeds are extremely intelligent, active and vigilant. They are basically friendly and peaceful towards strangers, but may well be a bit reserved. However, the breed can get used to this if it is socialized with strangers from a very young age. The Belgian Shepherd Dogs, including the Tervueren, are quite suitable as family dogs, but preferably for the active family. The Belgian Shepherd Dogs are dogs that require a lot of activation and exercise to thrive. You must therefore be prepared for the fact that it is a dog that requires you to go on many long walks or otherwise activate the dog. On the other hand, the Tervueren is a very responsive, teachable and cooperative dog, which is well suited as a companion or for a wide range of other tasks.

The Tervueren can also be used as a watchdog, as it is very attentive, alert and vigilant. Thus, no stranger enters without the Tervueren discovering it and drawing attention to its presence. Due to the breed's high intelligence, it is a breed that is suitable for virtually all types of tasks, whether it is guarding, shepherding, obedience, agility, as a rescue dog or for nose work where the dog must find missing objects.

Fur care

The Tervueren relatively long coats require a lot of fur care, and should therefore preferably be brushed daily. During the shedding periods, the dog also sheds a lot.

Health and disease

The Tervueren is basically a healthy and fit dog breed. Occasional and rare congenital disorders are seen, however. These can for example be underdeveloped hip socket (hip dysplasia), epilepsy, allergies as well as various types of skin and eye problems. However, it must be said that these conditions are quite rare. The average lifespan of the Tervueren is 10 to 12 years.
