This is a very proud breed, which is incredibly independent and with a distinct protective instinct, which is why it is commonly used for the large cattle herders from mountain areas in Southern and Central Europe. The breed is extremely vigilant and can be a bit suspicious towards strangers as well as other dogs. The breed requires a lot of dog experience and is not suitable only as a companion dog, or as the first dog you acquire. The breed tends to like to stay outside no matter if it is rain or sun, so it is therefore well suited to live in the countryside, which it also would prefer better than in the city. The breed requires a very early effort in relation to socialization, so that it can get used to other people and dogs.
The breed is originally from the Tatra Mountains, which are the mountains on the border between Poland and Slovakia. The dog is in close family with both Slovensky Cuvac, which is from the opposite side of the mountains and with the Kuvasz from Hungary. These breeds are all descended from large Asian mastiffs, which came to Europe earlier, probably 100 years ago. Their primary job was to defend cattle, houses and also humans, and that actually only changed during the last century where people began to see the dog as something other than a guardian. From around 1937, the Tatra Shepherd Dog was used by the military as a service and also a rescue dog, and was thus also registered for breeding. Males grow to 65-70 cm, while females grow to 60-65 cm. The breed will weigh 40-50 kg.
It is a very active breed with a great need for a lot of exercise. Like its close relatives, the breed is very calm most of the day. Due to its active nature, it will wake up and be on the move when it gets dark outside. The dog is not particularly contact-seeking towards other people and dogs, but it usually stays close to the owner.
The breed's strong coat is dense and nicely thick, which protects the dog really well in all kinds of weather. It sheds a lot, and this will especially happen if the dog stays inside when it is very hot. The dog's coat requires good care with a brush once a week. Therefore, it is also very important that you get the dog used to being brushed from a young age, so it is used to it.
The breed is very cooperative and good at listening, especially when it is raised from a puppy with consistency and really good treats. It is important to switch between the tasks during training, so that the dog does not get tired of it being the same. This will also create contact and a good relationship between the dog and its owner.
