Buy Swedish Dachsbracke

A Swedish Dachsbracke, or Drever as it is also called, is a Swedish hunting dog within the group of scent hounds.

Origin and history

The Swedish Dachsbracke is a hunting dog that has been developed in parallel in Denmark and Sweden. In Denmark the breed is called Strelluf Støver, while in Sweden it is called Drever or Swedish Dachsbracke. However, it is the exact same dog, and many Danes use the Swedish name, Drever, for the dog instead. Together with the old Danish Chicken Dog, the Swedish Dachsbracke is the only national hunting dog breed in Denmark and the Nordic region's only short legged scent hound. The Drever and Strelluf Støver were bred side by side in Denmark and Sweden, even though they are the same breed. The Swedish Dachsbracke is thus stated to be a Swedish dog, while many instead consider Strelluf Støver as a Danish dog, even though it is the same dog, just with a different name. The Strelluf Støver was created by the Danish real estate agent, F. Chr. Frandsen, who had the dog kennel Kennel Streluff, named after his hometown, the village Strellev in West Jutland.

The dog was bred exclusively with a focus on hunting and therefore has an extremely well-developed hunting instinct. It can be used to hunt everything from deer to foxes, hares and wild boars. Although the dog was bred with a focus on hunting, it can also work well as a family dog. The breed was recognized in 1937 by the international dog organization FCI (Federation Cynologique Internationale). The breed is today Sweden's most popular hunting dog, but since there are only quite a few places in Denmark where scent hunting is possible, it is not as widespread in Denmark.

Appearance and characteristics

The Swedish Dachsbracke is a low-legged dog whose physique is somewhat reminiscent of a Dachshund. However, the head of the Swedish Dachsbracke is relatively large in relation to its body.

The coat is coarse, straight and dense and is available in all colors with white markings, with the exception of completely white. The males are 32 to 38 cm tall, while the females are 30 to 36 cm tall. Both sexes weigh from 14 to 16 kg when fully grown.

Mentality and behavior

The Swedish Dachsbracke is a dog with an eager hunting instinct and is therefore a dog that is well suited for the family who goes hunting or who is just very active outdoors. However, the breed can easily function as an ordinary family dog as well, but it is recommended that it is not just a family dog, as it will get bored in that case. It is a dog that prefers to go out to "work" from time to time. Although the Swedish Dachsbracke is a breed with a great hunting instinct, it still needs a lot of closeness and human contact. It is not a dog that likes to be alone for too long at a time.

The Swedish Dachsbracke is bred to be a self-employed hunter, and can therefore be quite difficult to make obedient. It is therefore a dog that is best suited for the experienced dog owner. Only with consistent training from a very young age can it learn to run around without a leash. Feel free to train the dog in various cooperation exercises from a very young age. For example, start by teaching the dog to come when you call on it. Always train kindly, persistently and with lots of rewards.

The Swedish Dachsbracke as a hunting dog

The Swedish Dachsbracke is primarily used for movement hunting of e.g. deer, hares, foxes and wild boar. The Swedish Dachsbrackeuo works slowly due to its short legs and therefore does not stress the game. The calm pace has the effect on the game that it often stops to orientate itself and moves on quietly if the dog cannot be heard nearby. This gives the hunter good opportunities for shooting and reduces the risk of maiming the animal.
