Stray dog for sale or given away

A stray dog is not an official dog breed, but is instead a term for a dog that lives, or has lived, on the street. It is typical in a southern European country such as Greece. Today, several organizations offer adoption of stray dogs, where you as a private person can buy a dog that has previously been ownerless and lived on the street.

Reflections on stray dog adoption

If you want to adopt a stray dog, there are some things you should consider before then. Firstly, stray dogs typically have some experiences in their luggage, which makes them more difficult to raise than dogs that have been bred at home. Life on the streets is tough for a dog and it is not uncommon for them to have been exposed to a bit of everything. Therefore, when choosing to adopt a stray dog, be prepared for the fact that it requires extra patience, commitment and will than it typically does with other dogs. In return, it's all worth it. The typical countries from which stray dogs are adopted are Greece, Spain, Portugal, Bosnia, Italy and Thailand. In Europe, there are most stray dogs in Greece and Spain where you have a completely different relationship with dogs than you have in Denmark. Here, many people consider dogs to be pests, and the dogs are often treated accordingly. Therefore, make sure you are thoroughly prepared for what it means to adopt a stray dog before adopting.

Adoption of stray dog as a private person or via agency

As a private person, you can choose to adopt a stray dog yourself, but it is a difficult process that can take a really long time. You must arrange examinations at the vet, health certificate, vaccines and passport before the dog can be allowed to travel to Denmark from the country you want to adopt from. It may therefore be beneficial to use an agency to adopt a stray dog. There are several different kinds, and they take care of most things in terms of vaccines, vet visits etc. However, the agencies often have some requirements for you as a dog owner before you can be approved to adopt a stray dog. It can i.a. be your age, experience with dogs, life situation etc.

What does a stray dog cost?

If you choose to adopt a stray dog through an agency, the price is different. It all depends on the individual organization. However, the typical price is around DKK 3-5,000. A stray dog is therefore usually a lot cheaper than if you buy a dog in Denmark. This is partly due to the fact that you do not in the same way "know what you get". However, one should not choose a stray dog because it is cheaper, but because one wants to give a dog a second chance in life.

Alternative to stray dogs

The vast majority of people who are considering adopting a stray dog, do so because they feel sorry for the dogs. But even if you have the best intentions and just want to help a dog who has not had it easy, it is not necessarily the same as being the right choice. Instead, if you want to help some of the dogs living in miserable conditions in Southern Europe, you can support some of the many dog organizations working in those countries. In this way, you help to improve the conditions for a great many dogs.

Stray dogs in Denmark

There are no stray dogs in Denmark in the same way as there are in Southern Europe or in the rest of the world. But there are many stray dogs at the Danish animal shelter, who also long for a new home.

As an alternative to a stray dog from, for example, Greece, a dog from a Danish animal shelter might be an option.
