Spinone Italiano dogs and puppies for sale

A Spinone Italiano, or just Spinone as it is typically called, is an Italian dog breed in hunting dogs. The breed is one of the world's oldest hunting dog breeds.

Origin and history

The exact origin of Spinone Italiano is unknown. However, it is known that this is a very old dog breed, as sculptures and murals have been found all the way back to Antiquity where the dog is depicted. The first detailed description of the dog is from 1683, where it is described in the book "The perfect hunter". In the book, it is described as being very widespread in Italy, where it goes by various local names. Here, the breed was used for hunting in particularly swampy areas, which is the reason why the breed has remarkably large paws. The breed was close to being endangered in the middle of the 20th century, when other hunting dog breeds began to be used, but after World War II, the breed's popularity fortunately increased again. Today, the breed is a popular hunting dog, both in Italy but also in the rest of the world.

Size and height of the Spinone Italiano

A Spinone Italiano is between 58 and 70 cm tall and weighs between 28 and 37 kg. The males are larger than the females. The coat is short and rough and is typically white with orange or auburn markings.

Behavior and mentality

Due to its origin as a hunting dog, a Spinone Italiano is a dog that has a very great desire to hunt. It is therefore a dog that suits the active family well or if you go hunting, so that the dog can really be allowed to use his instincts.

However, the dog can also easily fall into place as an ordinary family dog, where it is calm and affectionate towards both adults and children. However, it is not a dog that is suitable to be kept exclusively as a companion dog, as it has a great need for activity and therefore needs to be "used" as well. In other words, it is not a dog that bothers to lie on the couch and cuddle all day. The breed is intelligent and teachable, but may well tend to be a bit stubborn if it does not see a purpose in the task. As the owner of a Spinone Italiano, you must be prepared for the fact that it is a breed that requires a lot of exercise and needs to be able to move freely.

It also needs to be mentally stimulated every day by solving various tasks, such as nose work, search work or game tracking. The dog can also be used for agility. A Spinone Italiano that is bored and understimulated can become destructive and unhappy. Therefore, train every day, kindly and consistently and in short but fast-paced sequences. Remember to reward the dog abundantly. While the dog is a puppy, however, one should be careful about exercising it too much. The breed develops rather slowly, and too much exercise at a premature age can inhibit and damage its growth. You can advantageously socialize the dog from a young age with both strangers and other dogs. Due to the calm and loving nature of the dog, it is not a dog that is suitable as a guard or protection dog.

Fur care

The breed has a relatively short, dense and rough coat, which has no undercoat. Although it sheds a lot, the coat should be brushed through regularly and preferably trimmed a bit as needed. A couple of times a year is usually enough. Also remember to wash the dog's eyebrows and long beard, as it quickly gets dirty and filled with dirt.

Health and disease

A Spinone Italiano is generally a very healthy and fit dog that is not prone to serious genetic or hereditary diseases. In rare cases, however, the dog may develop hip problems. In even rarer cases, a neurological seizure is seen, which can cause epileptic seizures. A Spinone Italiano's average life expectancy is 11 to 14 years.
