Buy Spanish Mastiff

The Spanish Mastiff , or the Mastin Espanol as the breed is called in the UK, is a dog breed that originated in Spain, which was originally bred to be a watchdog.

History and origin

The Spanish Mastiff probably, like the other mastiff breeds, is descended from the ancient Molosses, which are a group of large and solid-built dogs that have existed for more than 2000 years. The Spanish Mastiff is depicted and described in a more than 1000-year-old painting from Iberia, a peninsula in southwestern Europe. Back then, in the Middle Ages, the dog was used to accompany and guard herds of cattle, such as sheep, against attacks from wolves, bears and other predators. In order to perform its duties, the dog was equipped with large, thick metal necklaces with spiks / spears, whose function was to protect and help the dog if it got into a fight with, for example, a wolf. The first breed standard for the Spanish Mastiff was established by the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) in 1946. Later, in 1981, the Spanish dog organization, Asociación Española del Perro Mastín Español, was founded and they set up a breeding program for the breed in order to develop a new breed standard for the dog. The focus was to recreate some of the characteristics that the dog had when it was used as a watchdog many hundreds of years ago. Today, the dog is still used as a watchdog, but to a large extent also as an ordinary family dog and pet.

Appearance and characteristics

The Spanish Mastiff is, like most other mastiff breeds, a very large, powerful and muscular dog. It has a large and powerful head with a flat forehead. Small, slightly sloping eyes and relatively small ears. The neck is short and muscular. The males are typically about 77 to 80 cm tall, while the females are about 72 to 75 cm tall. Both males and females weigh from 75 kg and up to 100 kg. The coat is smooth but very strong and is typically solid in either yellow, orange, red or black.

The behavior and mentality of the breed

The mentality of the Spanish Mastiff is very much marked by its origins as a watchdog. It is a watchful and fearless watchdog that will protect what he has been given as a task with his life. Therefore, it will be extremely skeptical of anyone it does not know and who is intruding on its territory. An old Spanish saying states that "when a Spanish Mastiff sleeps, it guards most". Due to the origin of the breed as a watchdog, it is extremely important to make sure that the dog is socialized with other dogs and preferably small children as well, while it is a puppy, so that it gets used to them. It is a breed that requires a firm but loving hand. However, the dog thrives well with people it knows. In their company, it is a calm, loving and accommodating dog, which tends to attach itself very closely to its owner. The Spanish Mastiff is not a dog that is suitable as a beginner dog. You should only get a Spanish Mastiff if you are an experienced dog owner who knows what you are doing.

Health and disease

As the dog grows very quickly in the first few years of its life, it is important to be careful with exercise. It should not be overworked when it is in adulthood, as it can stress the bones. It can cause serious problems later in life for the dog. It is also important that the dog is given proper food. Even when the breed is fully grown and an adult, it is not a dog that tolerates excessive amounts of exercise. Finally, daily walking on stairs is not healthy for the dog either. Due to the dog's medium and dense coat, it should be brushed regularly. In addition, the dog's eye rims should be kept clean, and the dog's claws and ears should be inspected regularly.
