Background knowledge of the breed

This breed has a milder and calmer nature than most other terriers, and the dog is generally a little more tolerant compared to other dogs. The dog is happy, very curious and always kind to everyone and incredibly patient with children. Working as a farm dog was one of its former, original tasks, and the breed is still an excellent watchdog, but now also super suitable as a family dog. The breed needs a lot of physical exercise and employment that makes sense. It will also need a good social life in very close contact with the family. Some dogs can even be almost overwhelming contact seekers, so you may think they are a little too social. The breed was originally the dog breed of the poor Irish peasants.

The dog lived its rough life in the villages for many centuries. The breed has for many years kept rats and mice from the doors, and drove the farm animals in and out, looked after the owner's house and was also involved in the hunt for all kinds of game. Specialists could not be afforded. This background has the breed in common with all the other Irish Terriers. In the 1930s, this dog was raised as a breed and since then, it has fought for a solid place as a good and sociable companion dog. The males become 46-48 cm tall, while the females become 43-45 cm. The breed weighs 15-20 kg.

The activity level of the breed

A robust, active and energetic breed with a great desire to hunt. The breed appreciates the possibility of running free without a leash. The breed likes to go hunting on its own, but it is actually very responsive and has a good contact with its people, so it is easy enough to control it, even if it has got scent of something.

Fur care and hygiene

The half-length coat is nice and soft - a bit like silk. It is also glossy and can be wavy. The breed's fully developed coat is a few years old to develop. The coat requires a lot of work with a brush, but it actually does not shed that much. The coat can be shaped if you cut it into shape or you can let it grow naturally without major intervention.

Management of the breed

The breed is super attentive, has a very quick perception, and is mostly very cooperative, so the upbringing rarely brings any major issues. However, you must be unconditionally consistent, at the same time, very loving and positive towards the dog. You can advantageously change the exercises and tasks once in a while, so that the dog does not get bored.
