A Skye Terrier is a dog breed that originally originated in Scotland, and is according to The Kennel Club, which is the UK's official kennel club, one of the most endangered dog breeds in the UK.
The name of the Skye Terrier comes from an island in the Hebrides, the Isle of Sky, which is located off the northwest coast of Scotland. The island, from which the breed originates, is the largest among the archipelago's many islands. The Skye Terrier is an old dog breed, which was described as early as the 1570s. It was used for hunting i.a. otters, badgers, foxes and weasels. It was also kept as a regular farm dog, where it kept mice and rats away as well as acted as a watchdog. Later, in the 19th century, however, the breed was more widely used as a companion dog where it was particularly popular at the English court. It was especially Queen Victoria the 1st who took the breed and introduced it to the English royal family. They therefore began to breed the dog to look more and more "elegant", which is why its fur became longer and longer. Here special servants were set to take care of the long fur. Today, the dog is still mostly used as a companion and family dog.
The Skye Terrier is approx. 25 to 26 cm tall and weighs between 8.5 and 10.5 kg. It can have several different colors, including black, gray or cream. It is especially known for its very long hair, where the bangs often fall all the way down over the dog's eyes.
The Skye Terrier is an extremely loyal and faithful dog to its family. It has a special reputation for being a one-man dog, which attaches itself incredibly much to one particular person in the family in particular. There are even stories that when Queen Mary of Scotland was sentenced to beheading, she had her Skye Terrier with her as it followed her everywhere. And according to the story, one also had to behead the dog when it refused to leave its owner. Whether history is true or not is not known, but the Skye Terrier is at least a dog known for its great faithfulness. In relation to strangers, on the other hand, the Skye Terrier may well be a bit reserved and it is not a dog that is particularly interested in children, although it does accept them.
Due to the breed's origin as a hunting dog of i.a. foxes and badgers, it is a very hardy and strong dog, which does not allow itself to be discouraged. However, the breed has become more cooperative over the years, as it is no longer used as a hunting dog to any great extent, but instead as a companion dog. However, the old instincts still sit in the dog. It is not a dog that has a very great need for exercise or physical activation. It can be a really good idea to socialize the dog from the time it is a puppy, especially towards strangers, so that it overcomes some of its innate mistrust that it has towards people it does not know. At the same time, it can also be an advantage to start training the dog from a young age, as it, like many other terriers, can be a bit stubborn.
The Skye Terrier is a breed that requires a lot of fur care. To keep the dog's fur beautiful, it must be brushed thoroughly several times a week, preferably daily. In addition, the dog must be washed regularly, where it is important that you use a real dog shampoo and possibly conditioner. In addition to fur care, teeth, ears and nails must be inspected regularly.
The Skye Terrier is generally a healthy and fit breed that can grow very old. The most common cause of death for the breed is cancer. It is important that the dog does not get too much exercise as a puppy, as it can damage the bones.
