Buy Siberian Husky

A Siberian Husky is a dog breed that originally originated in northeastern Siberia in Russia, where it is used as a sled dog. The breed is related to the Samoyed dog and the Alaskan Malamute. DNA analysis has shown that the Siberian Husky is one of the world's oldest dog breeds.

Origin and history

The Siberian Husky originates, hence the name, from Siberia in Russia, where it has existed for thousands of years. Here it was used, and is still used today, as a sled dog for the Chukchi people, who are a Paleo-Asian people living around the Chukchi Peninsula in Russia. The name "Husky" comes from Eskimos and refers to Eskimos. The breed is also used in Greenland as a sled dog. The first time the breed was heard of in the West was in 1909, when the dog was used in a dog sled race in the town of Nome near Alaska in the USA. Here the breed attracted a lot of attention for its speed, and was therefore soon after imported to other parts of the world where it was used as a sled dog for transportation in areas with a lot of snow.

Appearance and characteristics

The Siberian Husky is a medium-sized dog that has a wolf-like appearance in many ways. It is an incredibly beautiful dog that looks very "wild". It has a thick close-fitting coat, pointed ears, pointed nose and beautiful clear blue eyes. The coat is available in several different colors, eg black or white with dark markings.

Character and behavior

The Siberian Husky is still used as a sled dog and in sled racing competitions in several places in the world, but is to a large extent also used as a regular family dog. As a family dog, it is friendly and social, but it is still not a breed that is always easy to deal with. It is a breed that is largely driven by instinct, and it can therefore be difficult to train. For this reason, it is a dog that is best suited for experienced dog owners. It is also a very active dog breed that needs a lot of exercise, every day. If they do not get enough exercise, they can become restless, which can lead to dissatisfaction and that the dog becomes destructive or even aggressive. A Siberian Husky that thrives and is well, however, is certainly not aggressive by nature, although it may well be a bit reserved towards strangers.

The breed usually gets along well with other dogs if it is raised with them. On the other hand, it may well be something reserved towards foreign dogs, though rarely aggressive. The dog has a great hunting instinct and will therefore basically hunt everything that moves. That is, everything from cats and other domestic animals to birds, deer etc. It is a breed that thrives well in the cold. It can therefore dig holes in which it can lie to be cooled down if it is very hot outside.

Caretaking of Siberian Husky

The Siberian Husky is a breed bred to survive under even the harshest and most inhumane conditions in Siberia. It is therefore a dog that is very robust and hardy, and easy to feed as it can eat pretty much anything. On the other hand, it may tend to be overweight if it is overfed or does not get enough exercise. It will basically eat everything you give it. It is also a breed that is made to work every day, so if it does not get more long walks or runs every day, it can easily become overweight. The coat requires moderate care and should preferably be brushed a couple of times a week, maybe a little more during the periods when it sheds.

Health and disease

Siberian Husky is, as mentioned, a very hardy and robust breed, which has good health. The average life expectancy is 11 to 13 years.
