Shih Tzu dogs and puppies for sale

A Shih Tzu is a small dog breed that, presumably, originated in Tibet. The breed was developed by Tibetan monks, who used them as temple dogs.

Origin and history

The Shih Tzu is a very old dog breed that is believed to have originated in Tibet, where it has existed since the 7th century. The breed was allegedly developed by Tibetan monks, who kept them as temple dogs. The theory is that the monks used the dog as a watchdog - not to protect them though, but to sound and alert them if strangers came. In addition, the dog was also used as a gift to Chinese emperors and the Chinese court. The breed is also called the Tibetan Poodle. In China, the breed was crossed with the Pekingese, and that was probably how it got its short snout. Later, in the 1930s, the breed came to Britain where it was recognized under the name Tibetan Lejon, which means Tibetan Lion dog. However, the name was later changed to Shih Tzu.

Character and behavior

Ever since its inception, the Shih Tzu has been bred to be a dog that has to be with humans. The breed is a companion dog right down to the bone. The breed is therefore very social, happy and friendly and gets along well with virtually all people as well as children and other animals. It loves to sit on the lap of its owner and be cuddled. The dog therefore works really well as a family dog in families with children, but can also easily thrive with a single owner. However, the Shih Tzu also has some of its old instincts as a watchdog sitting in it, and it will therefore make sure to alert the family if strangers come or it hears suspicious sounds. It is thus a very watchful and attentive dog. Finally, the Shih Tzu is a very lively, active and playful breed, which is very outgoing and likes to contact everyone to play. Daily walks are therefore necessary to keep the dog activated, just as it is also a good idea to stimulate the dog mentally every day with play or exercises. The breed is happy to cooperate and learn, and can relatively easily learn different things if you are consistent and train it from when it is a puppy.

Appearance and characteristics

A Shih Tzu is a small dog breed with an incredibly long and beautiful coat. It has an upright nose, small short legs and a relatively long body compared to the rest of the dog. The eyes are large, round and dark but with a friendly and warm expression. The dog is available in a wide range of different colors, but the most common is the golden / white. A Shih Tzu typically weighs between 4 and 8 kg and is between 20 and 30 cm tall.

Fur care for a Shih Tzu

Before acquiring a Shih Tzu, you must be prepared for the fact that it is a dog that requires a great deal of fur care. However, this can be avoided if one chooses to keep the dog's fur short all year round. If you do not do this, you must be prepared for many hours of brushing every week.

The dog must be brushed daily to ensure that the coat does not filter together. In addition, the hair on the head should be retained with a headband, so that it does not go down over the eyes. Finally, one often has to go through the coat for foreign bodies, which can very easily get stuck in the long coat.

Health and disease

Some Shih Tzu’s are born with crooked or even completely missing teeth, because of the small mouth they have. In addition, the breed may be prone to developing periodontitis, which means that it must be checked regularly by the vet and have their teeth cleaned.

The average lifespan of a Shih Tzu is 11 to 14 years.
