Buy Shiba

A Shiba, or Shiba inu, as it is also called, is an ancient breed of dog within Japanese dogs. "Shiba" means "little dog" in Japanese, but a Shiba is actually not that small of a dog. They weigh between 8 and 15 kg, depending on gender, and must therefore be considered medium-sized dogs. The Shiba, on the other hand, is the smallest of a total of six Japanese Spitz dogs.

Origin and history

The Shiba is reportedly a dog breed that has been around for thousands of years. In Japan, remains of Shibas have been found dating back to around 500 BC. Here, Japanese farmers kept the dogs in the mountainous Japanese countryside, where they were used as hunting dogs. Later, however, European hunting dogs began to be imported into Japan, which they began to cross with the Shiba to create a new type of hunting dog. This led to the Shiba at one point being close to extinction. However, some dedicated breeders managed to save the breed and maintain the "original" Shiba. The breed was first officially recognized in 1934, when it got its first breed standard. After World War II, the Shiba was again threatened where it was close to being exterminated due to the great bombardment of Japan. Fortunately, the breed did well, and is one of Japan's most popular dog breeds today.

Appearance and characteristics

The Shiba is a medium-sized dog that is approx. 37 to 40 cm tall and weighs 8-9 kg for the females and 11-12 kg for the males. In many ways, the dog can look a bit like a fox, both in terms of colors and tail. It is often golden red or "tan", with light markings on the underside and elsewhere on the body. The Shiba also has prickly ears, shiny clear eyes and a curly tail.

Mentality and behavior

The Shiba is a dog that can be very changeable in terms of temperament. It can go from being quite calm and relaxed to just suddenly being full of energy. The high energy level probably comes from the dog's origins as a hunting dog, where it was used to hunt small game, birds and other animals in the Japanese mountains. The Shiba still has its strong hunting instinct sitting in it, so it is a dog one should expect to hunt anything it can get close to. However, the Shiba is also an excellent family dog as it is both loving, affectionate and faithful to its family, and patient and tolerant towards children. Of course, it requires that you teach your children to treat and respect the dog, and that the dog has been socialized since it was a puppy. Exercise is something the Shiba loves. It should therefore preferably be exercised on a daily basis. It can be a good long walk around the neighborhood or play at home in the garden. As long as it just gets to move and burn some of that energy off. If you have it loose without a leash, just be aware that the dog's hunting instinct can cause it to suddenly run away if it sees anything moving. Finally, as the owner of a Shiba, you should be aware that it is a dog that can be a bit aggressive towards other dogs, especially male dogs. Therefore, be careful with other foreign dogs. The Shiba's aggressive behavior towards other dogs can be controlled, if it is socialized with other dogs from a very young age.

Care and health

The Shiba does not require much fur care. It is a dog that is naturally clean and odorless, although it does need a brush every now and then to remove dead hair etc. A bath once in a while is also a good idea. The Shiba is generally a dog that is not known for genetic or hereditary diseases. The average life expectancy is 12 to 15 years.
