A Shetland Sheepdog, also known as the Sheltie, is a dog breed that originated in the Shetland Islands, a Scottish archipelago north of Scotland consisting of 32 islands. The dog is known for its amazing abilities in dog sports, but is also popular as a regular family dog.
The Shetland Sheepdog was originally used to guard farmers' animals and lands on the Shetland Islands. Here they aimed to keep birds and other unwanted animals away. At the time, the breed was the farmer's best friend, as it protected both the fields but also the property from outsiders. In the late 1800s, the breed was discovered when the English fleet visited the Shetland Islands. Here they discovered some very intelligent dogs, which i.a. guarded the sheep for the farmers. Later, during the 20th century, business on the Shetland Islands changed markedly. The number of sheep breeders decreased and other occupations emerged. This meant that the number of Shetland Sheepdogs dropped markedly. Fortunately, however, the breed was retained and, in 1914, it was officially approved under the name Shetland Sheepdog for the first time. Some years later, in 1948, the breed came to other countries, such as Denmark and Norway for the first time. The breed quickly became very popular as a companion and sports dog and there are many active breeders all over the country today.
A Shetland Sheepdog is a medium-sized dog with a nice long coat, which is available in several different colors and varieties. The coat consists of two layers; a cover coat which is long and of coarse texture and an undercoat which is soft, short and dense. The breed also has a large and full mane and chest fur.
The eyes are black and almond-shaped. Males are typically 35 to 40 cm tall, while females are 33 to 38 cm tall. They can weigh anywhere from 7 kg to 12 kg.
First and foremost, a Shetland Sheepdog is characterized by being extremely intelligent. It is thus considered to be one of the most intelligent dog breeds at all and is ranked on several lists as the 5th smartest dog. In addition, a Shetland Sheepdog is an extremely loyal, loving and affectionate dog towards its owner, which it is always very aware of. However, it may be a little cautious and reserved towards strangers. In addition, it is a dog that loves challenges and tasks where it has to use the brain. It is very teachable and you can teach it an incredible amount of commands and tricks if you spend the time on it. It is a dog that is very suitable for the active family, as it loves to be out running, playing etc.
The Shetland Sheepdog can be a pretty barking dog. To reduce this, it is recommended that from when the dog is a puppy, you socialize it with other people, animals, dogs and cats so that it gets used to them and does not necessarily start barking every time it meets someone it does not know.
Despite the dog's long, beautiful fur, it is not actually a breed that requires very much fur care. A good brushing once a week to prevent it from filtering is usually fine if you make sure to implement this care routine from the start. During the shedding periods, brushing may be needed a little more often. The coat should not be cut or trimmed, but the coat around the foot pads should preferably be kept short. The same applies to the fur around the dog's butt, so that feces do not get stuck in the fur.
As with all other dog breeds, there are some congenital genetic diseases to be aware of. For Shetland Sheepdog, this applies i.a. eye diseases as well as hip and knee problems. Finally, there may also be some congenital mental problems such as excessive anxiety or nervousness. However, it should be emphasized that these conditions are rare.
