Buy Shar Pei

A Shar Pei is a dog breed that originated in southeastern China. Here it was originally used as a watchdog. In the western world, the breed is known for its many, deep wrinkles in the coat, which give the dog a very special look. Outside the West, for example in Hong Hong, however, the dog is significantly less wrinkled.

Origin and history

Shar Pei is a very old dog breed that has been around for centuries. It is believed that the breed is related to another Chinese dog breed, Chow Chow, because they both have the very special blue tongues. At the time, it was thought that the blue tongue scared away evil spirits.

Back in the 19th century in China, the Shar Pei was used for many different purposes, including as a watchdog, where it protected the farms of the peasants. As a hunting dog, where it i.a. was used for wild boar hunting. As an ordinary farm dog, it made sure to keep the farms free of mice, rats and other extraneous pests. And in fact, the dog even ended up on the dining table of Chinese families, especially during periods of famine. However, this has later been banned by law. Finally, the dog has also been used as a fighting dog.

A prehistory as a fighting dog

The breed's somewhat sad history as a fighting dog originates from Hong Kong where in the 1960s and 1970s it was used for dog fighting to entertain people. The breed's long, wrinkled skin served here as a kind of shield, which was to protect it from attack by other dogs. Its small ears are also bred for the purpose, as they are difficult to get hold of for other dogs that it is fighting against. However, dog fighting has since been banned in Hong Kong and across most of the world.

Shar Pei’s further spread

During the Chinese Revolution, the breed was close to extinction. Keeping a dog on the mainland of China was banned, and the breeders of the dog therefore tried to move the breed to Hong Kong to save it. It is said that in that period there were only approx. 20 Shar Pei’s left in Hong Kong and even fewer in China. Fortunately, the breed was rescued, and the first Shar Pei’s arrived in the United States in 1975, exported from Hong Kong. Attempts were made to spread the breed to other countries to ensure its survival. Later, the breed was also exported to Germany and the Netherlands. In 1980, we saw a Shar Pei in countries like Denmark for the first time. Today, however, the breed is still relatively rare, where there are only approx. 500 copies registered.

Mentality and behavior

The Shar Pei is a loving, affectionate, loyal and faithful dog towards its family, but may well be a bit skeptical and reserved towards strangers. This is probably due to the history of the breed as a watchdog. Early socialization with other dogs, children and strangers is therefore a really good idea. A Shar Pei that is not used to other dogs does not hold back from a fight if it feels threatened, or if it feels like its family is threatened. It is therefore not a dog that you just have to let go freely among other dogs. It is not a dog that has a huge need for activity, but it is a dog that requires an owner who is experienced and knows what he / she is doing. It is not a dog for a first-time dog owner. The dog has preserved many of its original instincts as a guard, fighting and shepherd dog. These instincts must be kept under control by an experienced owner.

Fur care, health and illness

Shar Pei means "sand fur" in Chinese and refers to the breed's short and stride fur. It is a coat that should preferably be brushed regularly. However, it is primarily the dog's wrinkles and skin folds that require a lot of care. These must be kept clean and free of dirt to avoid skin infections.
