Buy Sealyham Terrier

A Sealyham Terrier is a dog breed within the terrier that is originally from Wales. It was developed in the 19th century, by a Welshman named John Tucker Edwards, on the Sealyham House estate in Pembrokeshire, a county in south-west Wales. The estate was used in the 20th century as a sanatorium and medical facility, and was for many years owned by the Tucker-Edwardes family, who, among other things, used the estate to breed dogs.

Origin and history

In the 1840s, The Welshman, John Tucker-Edwardes, began to breed a terrier type, which was to function as a hunting and working dog for i.a. hunting badgers and otters. The breed should therefore be strong, determined and fearless, so that it could handle even the most aggressive badgers.

It is not known exactly which dog breeds John Tucker-Edwardes used to breed the Sealyham Terrier, but he probably used the Dandie Dinmont's Terrier, Fox Terrier, Cheshire Terrier and West Highland White Terrier. After several years of trying, John Tucker-Edwardes finally succeeded in creating a breed with great hunting enthusiasm, courage and determination. At the time, the breed was simply called the "Edwardes Terrier", but it was later officially recognized by the English Kennel Club under the name we know it by today, namely the Sealyham Terrier. Around the world, the breed is relatively rare and only quite a few are registered each year.

Appearance and characteristics

The Sealyham Terrier is a small to medium-sized terrier with a completely white or partially white coat, which may well have brown, blue or other dark markings on the head and ears. The coat has a dense undercoat, while the cover hairs are straight and rough-haired. The males and females are approx. equal in size and both weigh about 8-9 kg and are about 30 cm tall.

Mentality and behavior

Today, the Sealyham Terrier is rarely used as a hunting dog, which it was originally bred to be. Instead, it is primarily used as a family and companion dog. And although many of the breed's original traits have gradually been bred more and more away, the breed still possesses some of its hunting instincts and character traits as a hunting dog. It is therefore a very active and determined breed, which may well be a bit stubborn, like many other terrier breeds. It is therefore a dog that requires a consistent and loving upbringing of its owner. A well-behaved Sealyham Terrier is, on the other hand, a calm and loving dog that, despite its joy for activity, can easily be kept in an apartment, for example. It is loving, affectionate and faithful to its family, but may be a little reserved towards strangers or other dogs. It is therefore important to socialize the breed from a very young age. Also, train the dog to be home alone from the time it is a puppy, so that it gets used to this. One must be prepared for the fact that the Sealyham Terrier is a relatively barking dog, like many other terriers, and may tend to dig in the garden if allowed. If you choose to keep the dog in an apartment where it is not possible to dig in the garden, it is important that the dog is exercised daily in the form of walks.

Fur care

The Sealyham Terrier has a medium-length hard, combed and rough coat, which requires a lot of fur care. It must therefore be trimmed several times a year, approx. every quarter and preferably brushed weekly. Moreover, the breed's long hair on the snout often hangs down over the mouth and therefore tends to get dirty very easily, and must be cleaned regularly.

Health and disease

In general, the Sealyham Terrier is a hardy breed that is healthy and well. However, examples have been seen of dogs being born with either congenital deafness, back problems or eye diseases. However, these conditions are very rare.
