Buy Schipperke

A Schipperke is a small breed of shepherd dog that originated in Belgium.

Appearance and characteristics

A Schipperke is the smallest of all shepherd dogs. They are only approx. 20 to 30 cm tall and weigh between 3 and 8 kg. The coat is black and very shiny and is short on the head, at the ears and on the front legs, but longer on the rest of the body.

Origin and history

The Schipperke is an ancient dog breed that was already mentioned for the first time in the 15th century. In 1690, in Brussels, the first dog competitions were held with the participation of the Schipperke and later, in 1885, the Belgian Queen Marie-Henriette got a Schipperke. After that, the popularity of the little shepherd dog went fast, and the dog quickly became one of the most popular dog breeds in Belgium. In Belgium, the dog has been used for various purposes over time. Among other things, it was kept as an ordinary farm dog in the countryside, but has also been kept on ships where it had the task of keeping them free of rats, mice and other pests. In addition, it also guarded the ships with its loud barking if there were thieves within seight. Finally, the dog was used during World War II, where it was allegedly used as a messenger by the Belgian resistance movement. According to the stories, it was never discovered by the Germans.

Behavior and character

A Schipperke is a really small bundle of energy, with lots of drive. It is agile, lively, curious, playful and almost tireless. To its family, however, the Schipperke is calm, affectionate and loving. It is well suited for families with children, as it is both patient and tolerant of children. On the other hand, the breed may well be a bit reserved towards strangers, which is why it is well suited as a watchdog, as it will probably bark and alert the family if strangers come. Despite the active nature of the breed, it is a dog that can adapt to most environments and surroundings. It can therefore be kept in both an apartment, house or yard. However, it can be a bit territorial towards other dogs, and its self-awareness can sometimes lead to problems and clashes. A Schipperke is well suited for the versatile family who both like to be active, but who also want a dog who enjoys relaxing with its family. With a Schipperke, you get a dog that is ready for both the long walk in the woods and for fun at home on the couch. The breed is sometimes referred to as "the black devil" because it is so self-conscious and independent. However, one should not take the term too literally. With the right upbringing, and a firm and loving hand, a Schipperke is a great companion. The dog's personality depends to a large extent on how it is brought up. A Schipperke is well behaved and has been socialized with other dogs and children from a young age is a really good family dog.

Fur care of the Schipperke

The breed's beautiful and shiny fur requires a lot of fur care. On the other hand, the breed only sheds a little. As the breed has a two-layer coat with a fluffy undercoat and a long outer coat, it is recommended that you give the dog a good brush once a day. You do not need to trim the coat.

Health and disease

The Schipperke is known to be a dog that can get very old. They can thus be up to 17-18 years, although the average life expectancy is "only'' 13 to 14 years. It is not a dog that has any known health issues. Most defects that the dog acquires are due to too little exercise or overfeeding. Overfeeding and lack of exercise can, in the worst case, lead to problems with the heart, lungs and bones. In some rare cases, the breed may develop epilepsy.
