A Schapendoes, or Dutch Sheepdog / Shepherd Dog as it is also called, is a dog breed that originates from Holland. Originally, the breed was bred to be a shepherd dog and a farm dog, but, today, it is mostly used as a regular family dog and for dog sports such as agility.

Origin and history

The Schapendoes is an ancient dog breed that has been around for hundreds of years. It was originally created in Holland in the late 1800s, where it was primarily used as a shepherd dog. At the time, however, the dog did not have a specific name or breed. During World War II, the breed was close to extinction, as due to major changes in agriculture in the Netherlands there was no longer the same need for shepherd dogs. However, some dedicated and experienced dog breeders managed to save and rebuild the breed, and the population of the Dutch Sheepdog is in good condition today. The breed was officially recognized by the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) in 1971. In its home country, the breed was not recognized by the Dutch Raad van Beheer (the national kennel) until 1952.

Appearance and characteristics

The Schapendoes is a medium-sized dog with a long and wavy coat. It is known for its long beard and bangs, which are so long that you can hardly see its eyes. Due to the dog's relatively massive coat, it often appears larger and wider than it actually is. The coat is thick and coarse and with an undercoat.

The breed is approved in all colors, but the most common are the black / white. A Schapendoes typically grows 40 to 50 cm tall and can weigh anywhere from 12 kg to 20 kg.

Mentality and behavior

A Schapendoes is a happy, lively and friendly dog, which is good with children and is well suited as a family dog, where it will be an almost tireless playmate for the children. Due to the dog's past as a shepherd dog, it is a dog that is good for obedience training and is particularly suitable for e.g. agility or other dog competitions. A Schapendoes is also a very active dog that needs exercise and activation daily. Due to the dog's past as a shepherd dog and working dog, it also benefits from being mentally stimulated every day. The breed is very intelligent and easily learns new commands and tricks. You can easily train with your Schapendoes every day for several hours. A good tip here is to give the dog a small headband in the brow hair, so you can better make eye contact with it. As the breed has a past as a shepherd dog, it is a dog that is very attached to its "herd". It is therefore quite dependent on human contact and thus not suitable for families who spend a lot of time away  from home, where the dog will be alone at home. It will basically always try to keep the "flock" together. A Schapendoes is therefore an ideal dog for an active family with children. However, it is not a dog that is suitable as a watchdog, as it will not aggressively protect its family. However, it will typically bark and alert the family if it thinks there is danger ahead.

Caretaking of Schapendoes

A Schapendoes has a long, dense and tousled coat and therefore requires relatively much fur care, especially while it is young. Here it should preferably be brushed daily. On the other hand, the need decreases greatly when the dog grows up. Here, brushing once a week or as needed is usually enough.

Health and disease

A Schapendoes is a solid and hardy dog, which is generally described as healthy and fit. Thus, no health problems or other defects in this breed have been documented. However, it is always a good idea to ask about the dog's father and mother when you buy it, to hear if they possibly have had any health issues that you should be aware of. The average lifespan of a Schapendoes is approx. Fourteen years.
