Background knowledge of the breed

The breed is best known as "Kvik" from the Danish TV show, Matador. The breed is adorable and extremely dear. A Scanian Terrier is also an attentive and lively dog who loves activity of all kinds, and it thrives really well as a family dog. It loves to play, but it also has the ease of just lying down and relaxing. The Scanian Terrier loves people and likes to seek company, and it is especially good for children. When it comes to strangers, it is curious, happy and confident, and it does not have the need to investigate people first. In other words, it throws itself into your arms and it very much wants attention. The breed is a fantastic companion dog, which thrives well with dogs of the same breed and other dogs as well. The breed also enjoys walking and experiencing things with its family.

A Scanian Terrier is full of energy, and it is a breed that requires both attention and tasks, preferably a lot of tasks. In addition to possessing these qualities, the dog also works well as a rat hunter, and it digs happily and eagerly for its prey. The breed would love to be allowed to dig loose in a garden or anywhere else it moves.

Well over a thousand years ago, the type was widespread from Scania across Denmark to northern Germany, which is shown by archeological excavations. The farm dog is not a Terrier, but a Pinscher who was indispensable on any country estate to keep stables and barns free of rats and mice. It also functioned as an alarm bell when anyone approached. Breeding has been somewhat haphazard for centuries, but in the 1980s, the targeted breeding began, which led to international recognition as well as an FCI approval and standard issued on May 19, 2009. The breed will be around 34-37 cm with a weight of 7 -12 kg. The breed is therefore a very small dog, which, however, has a fairly large personality.

The activity level of the breed

The breed is fast in the legs and in the head, and it is quite intelligent. The hunting instinct is very well preserved, especially when it comes to digging holes where it might find prey like a mole or field mouse. The garden, in which the dog moves, has to be fenced in, but most garden fences can easily keep a well-stimulated family dog inside. Although, you have to remember that it can break out if it really wants to. The good thing about the breed, however, is that it does not tend to roam and constantly maintains in close contact with its owner and the family to which it is affiliated.

Fur care and hygiene

The coat of the breed is short, hard and smooth. The coat itself requires virtually no care, as it is actually not that demanding. However, you should know that the breed sheds a lot, which happens about twice a year. The stiff hair has an annoying ability to drill vertically into furniture and up into the soles of the feet where they can be a little difficult to remove in both places. It is therefore recommended that you brush the dog for loose hair, so that they do not create too much of an inconvenience for you later on.

Management of the breed

The breed is nimble and teachable. The dog really wants to cooperate and it is very responsive. However, the breed can be so eager to learn that it is difficult to control, and one must be very quick with instructions and praise, otherwise, the dog might overtake you and quickly start to engage in something else. The breed is fast on its feet and it can get away with almost anything, as it is so sweet and innocent.
