A Samoyed is a medium-sized dog breed that originated in northwestern Russia and Siberia. Here they were used as sled dogs by the Samoyed people, who have also given name to the breed.
The Samoyed is a medium-sized dog breed with an incredibly beautiful white coat, which is long and very dense. The males are approx. 50-60 cm high and the females 50 to 55 cm. They weigh between 20 and 30 kg.
The Samoyed is an ancient breed of dog that was used for many years by the nomads of northern Russia and Siberia as sled dogs. Here they lived with the nomads, also called Samoyeds, where they pulled their sledges, but they were also used for hunting, for protection, for shepherding and as a warm companion dog in the cold polar regions. The nomads then called the dog Bjelkier, as it is still called in Russia to this day. It was explorers from England who brought the breed to the West. It happened around the 20th century. The breed received its first official breed standard in 1909 in England.
Today there are many who call the breed "the smiling dog" because of its facial expression which looks like it smiles.
The Samoyed is a friendly, loving and accommodating dog that usually gets along well with most people, dogs as well as humans. It is also tolerant and patient with children, and is therefore well suited as a family dog.
However, it is also a very active and curious dog, with a high energy level. The breed is therefore very well suited to the active family, where it can really be allowed to burn off some energy. The Samoyed was originally bred to be a working dog, which is why it loves to be employed. It will therefore enjoy being used for pulling, agility, running, obedience training or anything else. However, many people mistakenly believe that it is a dog that wants to be alone outside all the time, but this is actually far from the case. The Samoyed is a very social dog who also enjoys lying down and cuddling with his family. It is thus not a dog that you can just leave out in a kennel for several hours at a time.
It is important that you raise and train your Samoyed from the time it is a puppy and this includes socializing it with other dogs and preferably children, so that it gets used to them. The Samoyed is a clever dog breed that quickly learns if you are consistent and loving in your training. It would be a good idea to remember to reward the dog and give it praise.
When you see a Samoyed dog with its large, beautiful fur, you typically immediately think that it probably requires a lot of fur care. But it's actually not that bad. On the other hand, the breed sheds an incredible amount. While the dog is a puppy, the coat should be brushed regularly. Once the dog is an adult, this is no longer necessary. During the shedding periods, which are twice a year, typically in March and September, the dog sheds an unusually large amount. Here it changes undercoat, and here you have to be prepared for the fact that there will be dog hair everywhere. You can take the worst by brushing the dog outside. Due to the dog's high level of activity, it is important that it has a nutritious and healthy diet. One must be prepared for the dog to eat a little more than other dogs because it burns so much. You can usually buy food specifically for the Samoyed dog in most pet stores. In addition, one can supplement with omega-3 fatty acids.
In general, the Samoyed dog is a healthy and fit breed, but it can, like all other dog breeds, be affected by hereditary diseases. This can be, for example, hip problems and shrinkage of the retina. However, these are rare conditions.
