The Saint Bernard dog is a large dog breed that originated in Switzerland. The dog is best known for its enormous size, but also its calm and loving mind.
The Saint Bernard dog is named after Bernard de Menthon, who was an Italian monk who built a monastery and a hostel in the Alps between Italy and Switzerland back in the year 980. The monastery was used as an aid to travelers who passed the Alps and who needed shelter due to the area's relentless mountain terrain and cold winter weather. Here Bernard de Menthon, and the other monks of the monastery, began to breed large and robust dogs, which were endowed with an amazing sense of smell. The dogs were to function partly as companion dogs for the monks, but at the same time also for protection and not least rescue dogs.
In relation to its role as a rescue dog, the Saint Bernard dog is often depicted with small barrels around the neck containing brandy or other spirits, but it is actually a myth that this kind of thing should have taken place. However, the Saint Bernard dog, as we know it today, is significantly larger and has a longer coat than the dog that the monks originally bred.
The Saint Bernard dog is a large and robust dog, which is known for its slightly sad eyes and fluttering ears. The males weigh from approx. 60 kg and all the way up to over 80 kg, while the females are a bit smaller and weigh from approx. 50 kg to 65 kg. Both males and females are between 65 and 75 cm tall. The coat of the Saint Bernard dog is medium length and typically red and white or striped.
Despite its enormous size, the Saint Bernard is a calm, loving and gentle dog that is good in families with children to whom it is very patient and tolerant. It is also very loyal to its family and can, if required, also be vigilant and protective. The Saint Bernard is not a dog that has a particularly great need for activity. It must, of course, be exercised daily, but does not need many, long walks. Especially when the dog is growing up, you must be careful not to over-exercise it. Due to its history as a working dog, the Saint Bernard likes to be used and have a "job". It could, for example, be pulling a cart or smelling tasks where the dog needs to use its eminent sense of smell. A Saint Bernard dog does not mind staying outside most of the day, but also thrives fine inside. Finally, the Saint Bernard is a quite intelligent dog that is relatively easy to raise. Calm, friendly and positive learning with lots of rewards is often a method of upbringing that suits it well. It is a good idea to start already when the dog is a puppy.
The Saint Bernard comes in two different fur variants; long-haired and short-haired. However, both have a thick coat with a dense and protective undercoat, and therefore both must be brushed through regularly. A bath every now and then is also a good idea. In addition, you should make sure that the dog gets adequate exercise. The Saint Bernard is not a particularly active breed, and should therefore be exercised daily to stay healthy and well. It does not need much exercise, but a bit every day is advised. The nails are cut when needed. They should preferably be kept neat and short. Finally, you should be careful not to overwork the dog in the summer, as it is very easy to overheat, which can lead to heat stroke. Therefore, always make sure that the dog has access to both shade and cold water in the summer.
Like many other large dog breeds, the Saint Bernard does not have the longest lifespan. They are usually under 10 years old, but may get older in some cases.
