A Saarloos Wolfdog is a dog breed, which was created in 1921 by the Dutch dog breeder, Leendert Saarloos, by crossing a German Shepherd and a wolf.

Origin and history

The Dutch dog breeder, Leendert Saarloos, created the breed in 1921 when he believed that dogs had become too domesticated and humanized. He also believed that the domestic dog had become too "clean" and therefore had too many health problems. Therefore, he initiated a breeding program where he tried to cross a German Shepherd with a wolf in order to create a dog breed that had several of its natural instincts preserved. The wolf with which he chose to mate the German Shepherd was of Siberian descent. However, Leendert Saarloos succeeded in creating a dog that both resembled a wolf and had several of the wolf's characteristics. However, it was found relatively quickly that the breed was not suitable for either guard, hunting or protection dogs, as it had the wolf's fearful and shy behavior inherent. The breed was only officially recognized in 1975, six years after Leendert Saarloos' death. However, they chose to name the breed after its creator, hence the name Saarloos Wolfdog or Saarlooswolfhond. Today, the breed is relatively rare outside the Netherlands.

Appearance and characteristics

First and foremost, a Saarloos Wolfdog is characterized by the fact that it looks like a wolf for confusion. It is relatively large and with a muscular and athletic body. The breed has a long, coarse coat with a dense undercoat. The coat color can have both light and dark shades. The tail is broad and powerful and the ears are large and erect. The dog is relatively long-legged in relation to the body and is thus between 60 and 75 cm tall and weighs between 36 and 41 kg. The males are usually much larger than the females.

Mentality and behavior

Considering that the breed is created by crossing a wolf with a German Shepherd, it is a breed that is relatively easy to train. It is significantly easier to train than other dog breeds that have wolves in them, such as the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog, which can be both temperamental and shy towards humans. After all, the Saarloos Wolfdog has some of its wolf instincts left in it, and can therefore be a little reluctant, reserved and suspicious of people, especially strangers. If strangers come into the home, the dog may well tend to get nervous or maybe even hide. This is a natural trait of the wolf that will always sit in the breed.

To its family, on the other hand, the Saarloos Wolfdog is a loving and affectionate dog that is both faithful and trustworthy. However, it is not a dog that is immediately suitable as a family dog. It can only be recommended if you are a very experienced family in terms of dogs who know the breed and know what it takes to raise it. It is a breed that needs an owner who exudes and shows authority and who has strong leadership qualities. The dog is also very independent and lively and is therefore not well suited as a companion and pet dog. It is not a dog that bothers to lie on the couch and cuddle.

Activity level and needs

The Saarloos Wolfdog is a dog that is very lively and has a great need for activity. It therefore requires an owner and a family who live an active life. The dog also needs to be mentally stimulated, for example through various tasks that it has to solve. It is not a dog that was created to perform any particular task. Thus, it is not a dog that has innate guard or hunting instincts. On the other hand, it is a dog that possesses the wolf's herd mentality, which is why it constitutes an extremely reliable and faithful companion for its owner. However, it requires that you as the owner show understanding and respect for the dog.
