The Black Russian Terrier, also known as the Chornyi Terrier, is a Russian dog breed that was bred in the then USSR in the 1940s and 1950s in order to create a working dog for various purposes, including for use in the military and as a watchdog.
Unlike many other dog breeds, the Black Russian Terrier is a relatively "new" breed, created as late as the 1940s and 1950s in the Soviet Union (present-day Russia). The breed was created in the Russian kennel "Red Star", which was a famous dog kennel located outside Moscow, which was controlled by the Russian military. Here the breed was created by crossing different dog breeds, i.a. Rottweiler, Newfoundlander and Schnauzer. The purpose of creating a large, strong and brave dog, which i.a. could be used by the Russian military as well as to guard areas. The dog was also bred to be able to handle many different climatic conditions. The breed was recognized as an official breed in 1981. The breed is relatively rare in most of the world outside of Russia.
The Black Russian Terrier is a confident, strong and loyal dog breed, with a strong sense of protection. It is by nature reserved towards strangers, but very loyal and faithful to its family, which it will protect with life at stake. It is a dog that requires a firm but loving hand and is not suitable for inexperienced dog owners. The dog will respond immediately if it feels its owner or family is in danger. However, it quickly calms down again when the threat disappears. When the Black Russian Terrier is not in a defensive position, it is a loving, affectionate and kind dog. The dog is created to be a working dog and therefore possesses great strength and endurance. It is reliable and teachable and can adapt to all environments and circumstances. Due to the dog's enormous size, however, it is not a dog that is particularly well suited to being kept in an apartment. Due to its past as a watchdog, the breed is very protective and vigilant, and attaches itself closely to its owner from whom it receives orders with great joy and enthusiasm. However, it basically does not listen to others. It is a dog that wants to be "used", ie. activated with different tasks every day. It is therefore a dog that is well suited for the active family. The dog must be socialized with other dogs and people from it is very small - this is very important. It is also a dog that must be brought up purposefully and with great respect and understanding by an experienced dog owner.
The Black Russian Terrier is an extremely large, powerful and muscular dog. The males are between 70 and 78 cm tall and weigh between 50 and 60 kg, while the females are between 68 and 72 cm tall and weigh 45 to 50 kg. The coat is strong, curly and thick and completely black. However, possibly with some gray hair here and there. Often, the dog's bangs are so long that the small black eyes can be difficult to see. The legs are strong and the shoulders muscular and wide. The paws are large and wide and the tail is highly set and carried raised.
Due to the dog's coarse and full coat, it is a dog that has a moderate need for fur care. It should thus be brushed regularly, preferably a couple of times a week at least, and trimmed a couple of times a year.
The Black Russian Terrier is generally a healthy and fit breed. However, examples have been seen of dogs suffering from hip or elbow problems. The life expectancy is 10 to 14 years.
