Buy Pug

A Pug is an old Chinese dog breed that in recent years has experienced a sharp increase in popularity in, among other places, the UK.

Originally, the breed originated in China where it has roots dating back to the early 16th century. Here, the breed was allegedly used to guard the Great Wall of China, although it may be a little difficult to imagine, given what the breed looks like today.

Appearance and characteristics of the Pug

The Pug is a small but densely built dog. The males and females are typically approx. equal in size, and are between 25 and 30 cm tall and weigh between 6 and 8 kg. It has a large head relative to the body with large, round eyes. The ears are small and thin. The tail is short.

The origin and history of the Pug

As mentioned, the Pug originates from China where it has allegedly existed for more than 2000 years. Ancient Chinese writings have been found which mention small, short-nosed and short-haired dogs, which are believed to be the parents of the Pug as we know it today. The breed first came to Europe in the 17th century. Here it was used as a court dog in Holland and England, among other places. Later, in the 19th century, the British Queen, Victoria of Great Britain, became known for her great delight in the Pug dog, of which she owned several throughout her life. Today, the Pug is a very common companion and family dog in most of the world, including the UK.

Mentality and behavior

The Pug is especially known for its incredibly charming, crazy and funny mentality and behavior. A Pug is a dog that is hard not to like and that can charm everyone with its loving and silly nature. The Pug is well suited as a family dog, as it is very indulgent and patient with children. You can therefore let your children play with a Pug with peace of mind without having to worry. The Pug is also very sociable and open to strangers as well as other dogs.

Activity level

In general, the Pug is not a very active dog that needs long walks or a lot of activation. Instead, it loves to lie on the couch and cuddle with its family. It happens, however, that the dog will catch a case of the zoomies, after which it wanders around the house at full speed with his toy. The Pug is a very playful breed, which can also be a bit of a teaser. Although the Pug may not think it needs much activation and long walks, it is still important that you, as the owner, make sure to give your Pug good exercise every day to prevent obesity. This is because it is a breed that tends to become overweight, if it does not get enough exercise. The most important thing for a Pug to feel good and thrive, however, it is the social contact with its owner, which it must have daily and which it can not get enough of.

Caretaking of Pugs

A Pug has a short, soft and dense coat with an undercoat. It is therefore a breed that requires daily brushing. In addition, you should also regularly inspect the dog's ears, eyes and the folds of the head, which must be kept clean. Finally, the dog's teeth should also be inspected, and preferably brushed, to prevent tartar and other dental problems. You can advantageously give the dog a tooth cleaning at the dentist once a year.

Health and disease

Due to the Pug's rather special physique, there is a risk that it will develop some health problems. These being i.a. hip problems, eye problems such as corneal ulcers as well as breathing problems. Finally, in rare cases, a Pug can develop epilepsy. A Pug typically grows up to between 12 and 15 years old.
