The breed is a large muscular dog of the Mastiff family. The breed is originally from the Canary Islands where it was bred as a guard and shepherd dog. Before 1936, the breed was also used legally for dog fighting in its home country, however, it has since been banned. When dog fighting was stopped, it resulted in the breed being close to extinction as early as the 1960s. But a Spanish association struggled to retain the breed and therefore diverted on it. They bred on the two race branches, Dogo Canario and Presa Canario, which are referred to as one and the same breed today. Later, this breed was recognized as a national symbol of the Canary Islands. In 2018, the official name of the breed was changed from Dogo Canario to Presa Canario. Originally, Dogo Canario and Presa Canario were two different breeds, but now there is almost no difference between the two, which is why they both go under the same designation.
This breed is one of the larger dogs seen on the market when looking for a dog for sale. As an adult, it can weigh up to 65 kilos and become somewhere between 60 and 65 cm high. The large dog has a very muscular body right from the broad head down into the straight muscular legs. It differs from other dog breeds by having what is called "cat paws" and it also has a walk that is similar to a cat’s. The reason for its cat-like walk is that this dog's body is longer than it is tall, which affects its walk.
If this breed has its natural appearance, it will have close-fitting hanging ears with a shape called rose shape. However, many choose to cut their ears so that they are small and pointy. A single walk is not enough - you will need to run, play and mentally train the dog in order to meet the needs of a Presa Canario. Games such as tracking and obedience tasks are good activation options for the breed. You are not establishing yourself as the leader from the start, you may experience obedience problems later on, as the breed is very independent and self-willed.
