Background knowledge of the breed

The breed is a shepherd dog that originates from southern Portugal. The shepherd dog of Portuguese origin has a nice and very gentle nature, which is very easy to like, making it a dog that everyone in the family would love. The breed is very kind to other dogs and fellow species. Furthermore, it is loyal and affectionate towards the whole family and only slightly skeptical towards strangers. Its loving nature is a definite plus of the breed, as it is easy to get along with and work well with pretty much all other dogs and humans as well.

The breed is best described as a lively and energetic dog who needs space and freedom to really move, as it is very active by nature. The breed requires a lot of meaningful tasks, such as regular exercise and activation if it is to be able to adjust to life as a family dog and companion dog. There is a known theory that the breed should be descended from two Briards, which were imported to Portugal in the early 1900s. However, the relationship with Catalan Sheepdog and Pyrenean Shepherd Dog is more likely. The breed has always been a companion for poor shepherds, but it has also worked with herds of goats, cattle, horses and pigs. Around 1970, it was close to extinction, but it was rescued at the last minute by enthusiastic dog people, and its continued existence is assured.

The breed grows to about 45-55 cm in height with a weight up to 12-18 kg.

The activity level of the breed

The breed is to that extent distinctly active, independent and not always unconditionally obedient, even though it is closely linked to its herd. It is constantly alert and responds to anything unknown with any barking. Its hunting desire is restrained and it does not tend to roam around.

Fur care and hygiene

The breed's coat is very long, soft and slightly wavy without an undercoat unlike most other shepherd dogs. The breed has a strong beard and eyebrows, which do not cover the eyes, however, it is a good idea to trim it every now and then. As a young dog, you will need to provide extensive fur care, which you have to be aware of before getting a dog of this breed. The coat of the adult dog can be adequately cared for by a thorough brushing once a week, as this will keep the coat completely in check. Over time, the fur care becomes less, but in the beginning, the care can be a little more extensive.

Management of the breed

The breed is actually fairly easy to handle, but it is recommended that you have some knowledge of keeping a dog before acquiring this breed. The breed possesses an extremely good perceptiveness. The breed is also teachable and very cooperative if it has respect for its owner. However, it can also be somewhat independent like many of the small shepherd dogs, and it is important to keep that in mind. You will do yourself a favor by respecting the dog's character, by being kind and very consistent, while at the same time making a virtue out of rewarding the cooperation you have with the dog. With this routine, you will also strengthen its general trust in strangers, people and other dogs.
