Background knowledge of the breed

The breed, Portuguese Podengo, is an old hunting dog, which originates from Portugal. The breed is known to be an extremely intelligent dog that is full of life. In addition to this, they are very agile and loyal. They possess a large portion of fearlessness, which makes them quite good watch dogs. The breed is usually good with children and other animals, if they are socialized at an early age where they have a chance to get used to children and other dogs. The breed likes to be with the family and it will always do everything it can to protect its family. The breed is available in three sizes: large (grande), medium (mid) and small (dwarf). They have the same origin and are very similar to each other in essence, but they are not bred with each other. Common to all sizes of breed is that they are lively and robust dogs. They are generally friendly and accommodating in the family where they often attach mostly to a particular person, who is also the person they would think is their leader. They can be a bit shy towards strangers, and they have to look at people before they just throw themselves into the arms of strangers. The Portuguese Podengo is said to be descended from the breeds brought to Spain and Portugal by the Phoenician traders 3000 years ago.

The Portuguese Podengo is also available in two fur variants in addition to the three sizes that the breed is also available in. Variations of the fur arose when crossbreeding was allowed with the local dogs in Spain and Portugal. The Podengo Portugues Pequeno is called the world's smallest hunting dog and has been used for rabbit hunting and as rat dogs on Portuguese farms for all these years. The breed is an incredibly skilled hunting dog due to its fearless mind.

The breed has a very great need for movement as well as close social contact with people, which is important to be prepared for if you want this breed. The breed is very old, but its background is unknown. It is possible that it is closely related to breeds such as Pharaoh Hound, Ethnahund and Podenco Ibicenco from the Mediterranean. Perhaps it originated by itself in northern Portugal. The largest of the three podengos is the original. The medium-sized one is bred on particularly small dogs of the breed, and the small one has been bred further down in size over the centuries.

The sizes vary a lot, and it reads like this:

- Dwarf: both sexes: 20-30 cm

- Medium: both sexes: 40-55 cm

- Large: Both sexes: 55-70 cm

The activity level of the breed

They have all been originally used for hunting, which apply to all variations of the breed, and they usually adapt nicely in a herd, if it is a herd of the same species. The hunting desire of the breed and their joy of running around freely is still intact. They can be very difficult to call back to you, if they have gotten the scent of game, as they have a distinct hunting instinct.

Fur care and hygiene

As mentioned above, all three sizes are available in two coat variants: The short-haired coat is smooth and close-fitting. The long-haired coat is tousled and rough like wild boar brushes and forms a small beard on the dog. For both variants, the coat is without undercoat and fringe. You can minimize the shedding of the breed if you brush the fur thoroughly a couple of times a week.

Management of the breed

Common to all dogs of this breed is that they are teachable and have a quick perceptive ability, but their independence and hunting desire is pronounced, and this should always be kept in mind when you have a dog of this breed. This also means that the upbringing can be a bit complicated if you do not have experience with dogs that possess the same mind. If you want to achieve the best results with the dog, it is recommended to start training early. It is also important to train kindly, persistently and consistently in short and fast-paced sequences with an inventive use of rewards that can maintain the dog's interest in training.
