Background knowledge of the breed

The breed, Porcelaine, belongs to one of the French scent breeds, which are mainly very docile, happy and confident towards the family and also the children of the family. The breed is very accommodating to people it does not know, and also sociable compared to other dogs that it does not live with. First and foremost, The breed is a good hunting dog with a great desire for hunting. The dog follows the prey, for example a hare, fox or a deer with a loud bark. The dog is very rarely seen in this country, and it is not exclusively suitable for being a family dog, as it wants to be activated with training that has to be related to hunting and where it can be allowed to use its super good nose.

The Porcelaine breed has a great need to be social with the family and, in addition, also has a need to be exercised and challenged in order for it to use its nose. The breed needs to run free, which should be done behind a safe fence, so you have control of it, as the dog's desire to hunt can quickly take over. A calm and experienced dog owner is the perfect match for this breed. Many of these dog breeds can be found in hunting stories, and the Porcelaine breed originates from the province called Franche-Comté, located in the eastern part of the French Alps - those facing Switzerland. For this reason, the dog was known for many years under the name, Chien de Franche-Comté. It is said to be probably the oldest of the French Scent Hounds. The breed is named after the shiny white fur that people think can make the dog reminiscent of porcelain.

The males are 55-58 cm and the females 53-56 cm. They weigh 25-28 kg as adults

The activity level of the breed

The Porcelaine dog is very enduring and can work on its own, but you will experience that several dogs can work together in a so-called "pack". The dogs are often used for hunting most kinds of game, from birds and small hares to deer. They make an excellent hunting partner, as they are really good at adapting to different terrain. The dog is very lively, energetic and can easily go its own way, if it is not called back and you do not have close contact with the dog.

Fur care and hygiene

The breed's coat is a short and dense coat because it originates from a warmer climate than here. You can use a soft brush for fur care on a daily basis. The dog's large and heavy ears should be inspected occasionally and should be kept as clean as possible.

Management of the breed

The Porcelaine breed is really happy to learn through positive reinforcement where good behavior is rewarded well. As the breed has a great desire for hunting and an interest in getting rid of game, it is very important to practice call backs, preferably completely from when it is a puppy. You should keep training and reinforcing the call backs, so you have control of the dog.
