The Pomeranian breed is a dog which, despite its small size, has much of the Spitz dogs' great self-confidence and need to be vigilant. It will therefore also need to bark at everything and everyone. It is one of the world's smallest dog breeds, but it certainly does not feel like a small dog. The breed requires a lot of respect from everyone who treats it, and this is both humans but also dogs. The Pomeranian is a very social, lively and energetic breed that really appreciates a few daily walks. The breed must learn from when it is a puppy to get along with other dogs, so that it gets used to being with others and does not need to challenge them.
The breed is the smallest Spitz dog breed and originates from Pomerania in Germany and is a result of dog breeding on small dogs of the breed German Spitz. The Pomeranian breed is already described around the year 1700 where it was a larger dog with less fur than the one we know today. The breed did not really get the great interest in its home country, and it was only when it gained interest and foothold in the UK that the development and interest in the little dog took off. The very dog-loving Queen Victoria had more than one of the little cute dogs, thus the popularity was secured and the breed became world famous. The breed will be 18-22 cm tall for both sexes, and will weigh 2-3 kg.
The completely original rat dog has been bred smaller and smaller, and it is now exclusively a family dog. The Pomeranian breed thrives when it is in close contact with the family, but it is not happy to be carried around on the arm all day long, as it is active and loves to play.
The breed's diverse coat, which almost leads one's thoughts towards a pompom, actually requires careful care, if it is not to end up filtering together in lumps that bother the dog a lot. It is a good idea to get the dog used to being brushed and get the fur trimmed as a youngster, so it does not become a conflict as an adult. You should spend about 10-15 minutes brushing it daily.
The breed is super happy, aware of things and wants to learn. The dog can become very obedient if the owner is just patient and kind to the dog, but also consistent. It has really good track abilities and challenging tasks will stimulate the breed in a really good mental way.
