Background knowledge of the breed

The breed is confident and brave. The breed is actually known as both Polish Greyhound and Chart Ploski, although it is not a direct relative of the Greyhound dog as we otherwise know. In family contexts, it is often attached to one particular person, but it is kind to everyone and indulgent with the children of the family, which is a really good trait that the breed possesses. When it comes to strangers, the breed is quite vigilant and it may be a bit reserved but, at the same time, it is usually reasonably sociable in relation to humans. However, the breed can appear challenging to other dogs, and species in particular, and it generally thrives best as the only dog in the household. With this breed, it is important to know that it needs a lot of exercise - and it needs a lot more exercise than other dogs need. The breed appreciates being a companion on the bike, running or riding trip, if you have the opportunity. A characteristic of the breed is that it uses its nose more than most Greyhounds and appreciates many mentally stimulating tasks. Therefore, it will definitely be a plus if you have the chance to stimulate the dog mentally through various tasks.

As early as the 14th century, the Polish Greyhound is mentioned in connection with falconry. It was especially popular with the nobility, who went on horseback hunting for wolves and all kinds of small game. The breed was widespread in Poland right up until World War II, when it became difficult to keep large dogs. In 1946, Greyhounds were banned in the countryside, and the breed was considered extinct soon after. However, it had survived among the rural population, who used it to supplement the meager supplies of food, and it is now restored.

The height of the breed can vary a bit, but it usually reaches a maximum height of 80 cm, and this applies to both males and females. The breed is very slender in its stature and will never weigh over 31 kg.

The activity level of the breed

It is believed that the breed is a cross between local drifting hunting dogs and greyhounds, and it has retained characteristics from both groups, which makes the breed extremely enduring and very fast. The breed hunts in a very special way by following a trail, but at the same time they also hunt using sight. The desire to hunt is great, but to control during training, and if you have an understanding and not least knowledge of the nature of the breed.

Fur care and hygiene

The coat of the breed is quite coarse without being either rough or silky. The length of the coat can vary a lot, and the coat can form moderate pants at the back of the thighs and be a little bushy on the tail. The coat protects well against the weather and only needs a thorough weekly brushing, so fur care is not a big problem with this breed.

Management of the breed

The characteristic of the breed is that it is independent. It can also be described as cooperative, and you will often see this breed attach itself to the person whom it has accepted as its friend and leader. With a friendly and consistent upbringing, it becomes significantly more obedient than most other Greyhounds, and it can become an excellent family dog, if that is what you want from it.
