Background knowledge of the breed

The English Pointer is an independent, stubborn and strong-willed dog, so it is clearly best suited to live in the countryside due to its need for exercise as well as the fact that it has infinite amounts of energy that it needs to get rid of. This distinctive hunting dog can easily find its way into a family that is interested in nature with an active outdoor life, despite its enormous need for exercise. However, it is worth mentioning that the breed is not a dog for the first-time dog owner, and it is not suitable as a company dog only, if that is exactly what you intend to use the breed for. In general, the breed is friendly and accommodating to children as well as adults, but it requires a lot of experience with dogs who have a similar mind. The breed has a very great need to use its nose and move around freely without too many restrictions and preferably on large areas where it can get free drainage for all its energy that it contains. You will do yourself a favor by accustoming the dog to positive socialization and a life of close contact in its young years, as it reduces its tendency to social nervousness, which may otherwise arise if the above is not observed. The breed most likely originated from Spanish or Portuguese hunting dogs that came to Britain with returned soldiers in the early 18th century. A few years later, it was already established as a true British hunting dog, and several depictions are known; a painting from 1725. It is valued for its hunting characteristics over large parts of the world and has contributed to the breeding of the German Chicken Dogs. The color is of secondary importance. It is said that a good Pointer can not have a bad color. The breed grows to about 63-69 cm with a weight of 20-30 kg.

The activity level of the breed

The breed can not stand still, and it moves better at full speed than in trot, and it is faster than lightning when searching a terrain for birds, which it is absolutely incredible at. However, the breed is thorough, efficient and enduring, at the same time, it is lightning fast. The trained dog is responsive to instructions and generally maintains good contact even at a great distance, but obedience must be trained from an early puppy age to achieve a responsive dog.

Fur care and hygiene

The short coat of the breed is shiny, smooth and quite fine in structure. Fur care is virtually non-existent, and a daily wipe with a damp cloth removes dust and loose hair as easily as nothing. The coat does not protect much against the weather, but the dog is not littered if it is allowed to move. However, if you assess that the dog is freezing, you can remedy this by putting the dog in a wind-repellent jacket that can withstand the cold.

Management of the breed

As a youngster, the dog is happy to learn and is even extremely cooperative. This means that the upbringing is mostly quite uncomplicated, and the breed is therefore easy to influence if you get started early on.
