Background knowledge of the Pharaoh hound dog breed

A very playful and lively dog that usually has no problems with humans or other dogs. A friendly creature that is very loving to family members. The breed is also attention-grabbing and loves to be social with people who can give it some attention and that understand the mix of hunting Pointer dog and Greyhound. The dog has a great urge to move with speed over long distances and enjoys being able to use its body. It will be happy being very close to its owner as the dog also enjoys the social contact. Archaeological evidence shows that this breed has existed for more than 4000 years, and its look has not changed that much over the years. The breed probably existed before our time and is originally from Egypt where the dog could eventually be found on several islands in the Mediterranean. It lived unnoticed and was primarily used for hunting hares and rabbits. The breed hunts in droves. By the 20th century, the first dogs of this breed came to Britain from Malta. It was not until around 1960 that a greater interest in this beautiful breed arose. The size varies - males are about 56-63 cm tall, while females are 53-61 cm. The breed weighs about 20-25 kg when reaching adulthood.

The activity level of the breed

The breed is a fast and very efficient hunting dog, which uses both sight, hearing and its enormously good sense of smell. The dog has a lot of energy and it tends to roam if it sees a prey or smells something that activates its instinct for hunting, so therefore it is not a good idea to let it run around without a leash.

Fur care and hygiene

The dog's coat is short and dense, and can range from fine to slightly coarser. The coat itself does not require any care, but you can advantageously clean it with a wet cloth that removes loose hair. The coat does not protect much against cold weather.

Management of the breed

The dog should be brought up with kindness, but it is also important that you introduce consequences in order to create boundaries and respect. Of course it is important to reward it with treats when doing a good job. As previously mentioned, you should avoid having it loose because it can roam, but also because it can be a little harsh on other dogs, and a game can quickly end badly, because it is a hunting dog by nature, developed for hunting.
