Background knowledge of the breed

The breed is small, but, at the same time, also a robust companion dog that is suitable everywhere. The breed is very loving towards the family and very indulgent towards the children of the family, if it is raised with them. In relation to strangers, it can be vigilant and be a little reserved at first. The only thing that distinguishes this breed from the Papillon is the dog's ear. In addition, they are physically and mentally identical. A Phalène needs exercise, and a lot more than you would just expect from its size. The breed loves human company and enjoys mentally stimulating challenges. From the 1500s to the 1800s, this breed was the favorite breed among the southern European aristocracy. The breed was the court dog for the French king, King Henry lll, and his descendants for the next 250 years. The variant with the ears hanging down is probably older than the one with upright ears. In the mid-1900s, the breed was even called a butterfly with hanging ears. In 1667, the breed became an independent breed with its own name. Phalène means night swarms in French. In relation to size, the breed grows 28 cm tall for both sexes and weighs 1.5-5 kg.

The activity level of the breed

The Phalène is a small version of a hunting dog and its hunting instinct is still active in today's companion dog. The dog prefers to be in close contact with its family, but does not like to be carried around and sit in the arms of the owner all day long, as it would rather go outside and be active.

Fur care and hygiene

The breed can be described as a clean dog that will go to great lengths to make itselves clean like a cat. The dog's drooping ear requires a lot of attention and you must be aware that the breed tends to get tartar. The coat requires care with the brush on a regular basis.

Management of the breed

The breed is nimble, teachable, active and happy to do anything with the owner. The dog will be happy to perform tasks where it has to perform an action, and it would also enjoy practicing commands with the owner. Raising the breed is not difficult and does not require much if you start early on.
