Background knowledge of the breed

It is the layer of hair and the colors that distinguish the three Belgian Griffons from each other. All three are considered independent breeds, and you prefer not to pair them with each other. The dogs’ personality and physique are the same. The breeds are some lively dogs that are self-aware and very energetic. The dogs are most often seen as companion dogs where they adapt to all kinds of lifestyles and family types. They are very vigilant towards strangers, where they also are a bit hesitant and just have a look at the person before accepting them completely. They will be just fine in apartments but enjoy getting out on some long walks. They also love to be challenged with some tasks that they have to solve. It is a very social breed that loves to be close to its owners and enjoys caring about others.

The three Griffon breeds all descend from a breed called "Smousje" which many hundreds of years ago lived in and around Brussels. In the 19th century, bloodlines from the well-known King Charles Spaniel (Ruby) and Pug were added to the breed, which gave them a black and short-haired coat, and this established the current breed type. The small dogs were very alert and were bred to keep an eye on vehicles as well as to keep mice and other things away from the stables. The breed grows between 18-20 cm tall and weighs about 3.5-6kg as adults.

The activity level of the breed

The breed loves to be active, which can be done through run and play. Originally they were there to hunt mice and rats in the stables, so therefore the dogs still have a hunting desire in them. They can therefore be drawn by something and run in advance for themselves. They are not always good at listening, so you have to raise them well and be sure to have them within close distance, if they are running around without a leash.

Fur care and hygiene

The breed's dense and slightly fluffy fur is kept clean with regular brushing. It can also be a good idea to have the dog trimmed once in a while. There is not much fur care, but a good walk with the brush once in a while is good for them.

Management of the breed

The breed is very teachable and cooperative, even though they are very independent and do not always listen at the right times. The dog loves to be in contact with people and they enjoy challenges. If you wish to challenge the dog, you could start participating in agility or obedience training.
