Background knowledge of the breed

A Pekingese is a small dog, though with great self-esteem. The breed is confident and daring, and can be very stubborn, effervescent and want to challenge others. But the dog is also a very loving dog towards those whom it chooses to respect. It is a dog that most often attaches itself to a person, but the breed can also easily be included as a family dog in a family with children, if it has become accustomed to them as a puppy. Therefore, the dog should also be socialized as early as possible. The breed requires a lot of attention and contact with people, and a consistent upbringing where it learns who is in charge. The dog does not need much exercise but the coat requires care.

The story goes that the Buddha was often accompanied by small dogs that could turn into lions if they were challenged. According to history, the dogs that the Buddha was surrounded by have been perceived as the Pekingese of today. The breed was bred for centuries in China and was considered an important breed, as it was the property of the emperor. No one but the emperor was allowed to own them. When the British conquered Beijing in 1860, they found some abandoned dogs in the emperor's palace and these were later smuggled out of China, which is now the basis of the breed we know as Pekingese. Pekingese grow 15-23 cm tall and this applies to both males and females. The males weigh a maximum of 5 kg, while the females can weigh up to 5.5 kg.

The activity level of the breed

Hundreds of years ago, a Chinese empress wrote that the Pekingese had short and curved legs, so that it could not run far away, and then it had to be picky in terms of food, so that it did not become fat. However, the breed really likes to walk at its own pace and smell the good scents outside.

Fur care and hygiene

The coat requires a lot of care. The dog has plenty of strong fur that you will have to brush a lot in order to keep it free of knots, as it filters really easily. The dog has wrinkles on the face, including the nose and eyes, which are very important to keep clean.
