The Parson Russell Terrier is a super energetic, active and lively dog. The breed is happy to play and loves everyone in the family, which includes children as well as adults. The dog is curious and very accommodating to all strangers it encounters, but the breed may have problems with other dogs, especially male dogs may well be a little bothered by each other, as they tend to behave defiantly. The dog will never back down from a fight, which can cause problems with other dominating male dogs. The breed does not do well without mental challenges, so this is very important to consider if you want to acquire a Parson Russell Terrier. The breed is basically a working dog that enjoys getting daily exercise. The man behind the breed is Pastor John "Jack" Russel who lived 1795-1883. He was born and lived all his life in Devon. He was a skilled rider and loved to go hunting. He spent his entire life breeding good terriers and crossing dog breeds to get the perfect dog. He spent 64 years of his life on it, and a variant he came up with was the Jack Russell Terrier. The breed was recognized in 2001. Males become 34-38 cm tall and females grow up to be 31-35 cm. They weigh between 5-8 kg.
The breed is very energetic, built for speed and has great endurance. Its hunting instinct is super strong and aimed at everything small that moves. The breed was often used on fox hunts where its job was to find the fox and make the hunters aware of its location, but not attack it. The breed is always in control of where its owner is, even if it is busy pursuing a trail.
The breed comes in two different fur versions. A rough-haired and a smooth variant. Their fur is, in both varieties, coarse, smooth and very dense. One breed of dog has more undercoat than the other, and shedding is minimal. If you regularly brush the dog, you remove the loose hair, and therefore you will not experience as many hairs around the house.
The breed is super hardworking and loves to do anything. The dog will go a long way for praise and a treat. If one accepts and understands its great independence and desire for hunting there will be no problems in the upbringing of the dog. However, one should not let it challenge other dogs
