Background knowledge of the breed

Despite its modest size, it is a lively, robust and enterprising dog that can withstand all kinds of weather. It's a companion dog but it's not always content with just lying on a pillow in front of the stove and letting life pass. A Papillon is good at adapting to any family. It is a bit vigilant and often a little skeptical of strangers. It is enduring and loves good long walks where it can move freely around and use your nose to sniff. From the time it is a puppy, it should get used to interacting with other dogs. In the Middle Ages, Papillon was a valued dog. It was most often the noble ladies who acquired a small dog like a Papillon, which is evident from many paintings, among other things. Towards the revolution, the breed became popular at the French court, including with Queen Marie Antoinette and Madame de Pompadour. Their upright ear, their interest and abilities in mouse hunting suggest that they were previously mixed with Spitz dogs. The name comes from their markings on the head and the name means butterfly in French. They grow to about 28 cm in height and weigh 1.5-5 kg. This applies to both males and females.

The activity level of the breed

There is a large desire for hunting hidden in the small dog and it is, as described, a very skilled mouse hunter, and sometimes you can also experience it going hunting for larger animals than mice. In nature, it loves to sniff and can easily follow a good and exciting scent for a long time, but still maintains a good contact with the owner.

Fur care and hygiene

Its fur is shiny and slightly wavy at the ends, however, the breed does not have an undercoat. Its coat feels firm and not wildly soft, but the coat protects the dog really well. The coat is cared for with a weekly brushing, but the coat on the ear, tail and on the chest will benefit from a daily brushing.

Management of the breed

It is a super attentive and energetic dog that is really happy to learn new things and solve tasks. Its ability to collaborate is fantastic, and it is easy to train when you include variety and positivity. It can be a really good dog for agility.
