Old Danish Chicken Dog for sale

A Old Danish Chicken Dog, or Danish Chicken Dog as it is also called, is a dog breed within the type of standing hunting dogs, which, not surprisingly, originate from Denmark.

Origin and history

The history of the Old Danish Chicken Dog is in many ways part of Danish history and part of the country’s cultural heritage. The breed is from the early 18th century, when a Danish farmer named Morten Bak wanted to create a new breed for hunting that was both robust and efficient. Therefore, he began crossing local farm dogs with traveling dogs. Many of the dogs were probably influenced by Spanish Pointer dogs and similar breeds. The farm dogs were probably primarily scent hounds of the bloodhound type, such as the St. Hubert’s Hound.

The result was the Old Danish Chicken Dog as we know it today. The new breed quickly became a popular hunting dog, i.a. for his sharp nose and good ability to keep in touch with the hunter. In the 19th century, the breed ended up becoming so popular that it was the most used hunting dog in Denmark. In the 1930s, however, the popular hunting dog was close to extinction. This prompted the Danish hunter, Christian Bansen, to write a post in the hunting magazine, "Jagt og Fiskeri", in 1939, in which he appealed to make an effort to preserve and save the breed. The post was to prove to be the beginning of a major rescue operation of the breed. The post gave rise to major breeding work where they diligently tried to recreate the breed. Fortunately, it succeeded and the breed has not been endangered since then.

On the contrary, the breed is still an extremely popular hunting dog today, which, however, is also widely used as an ordinary family dog. Today, it is estimated that there are between 1200 and 1500 Old Danish Chicken Dogs, most of whom live in Denmark. However, there are also a few specimens in Germany, Norway and Sweden, but the breed is far from being as well known and widespread abroad as it is in Denmark.

Appearance and characteristics

The Old Danish Chicken Dog is a medium-sized dog. It is between 50 and 56 cm high for the females and between 54 and 60 cm for the males. It weighs between 26 and 35 kg. The males typically weigh the most. The snout should always be brown / liver colored. The ears are long and drooping. The coat is white with brown markings. The markings can be both large or small, and can also consist of many small spots. The coat is short and dense without cover hairs. Although the coat does not protect much against weather and wind, the dog is robust, hardy and not afraid of the cold. However, the dog should still be kept warm with a blanket or jacket if it is out in cool weather for long periods of time. It is also not suitable for being left alone outside during the winter.

Mentality and behavior

In general, the Old Danish Chicken Dog is a calm and balanced dog. Although the dog was originally bred to be a hunting dog, it is an excellent family dog, given that it is both calm and patient with children and other animals. Today, the dog is actually mostly used as a family dog rather than as a hunting dog due to these characteristics. However, it does not go unnoticed that the Old Danish Chicken Dog is a hunting dog, and it therefore has a great need for activity. Especially when it is young, it needs to use its energy. It could be a good idea to go for good, long walks where it can be allowed to run free, which should preferably be done every day.

Fur care

The Old Danish Chicken Dog is not a dog that requires much fur care. A daily brushing to remove loose hair is usually enough.

Health and disease

The Old Danish Chicken Dog has good health, and is not a dog that is known to develop serious diseases or other disorders. The average life expectancy is 12 to 14 years.
