Buy Malinois

Malinois is a dog breed within Belgian Shepherd Dogs. There are a total of four different varieties of Belgian Shepherd dogs; Groenendael, Laekenois, Tervueren and finally Malinois, which we will take a closer look at here. In appearance, Malionis is very similar to a German Shepherd, and many easily confuse the two breeds. A Malinois has the same warm reddish-yellow color with black masks, just like the German Shepherd.

Background knowledge of the breed

Malinois is a short-haired variant of the Belgian Shepherd, which is descended from the ancient, Central European sheepdogs. Malionis, like the other Belgian Shepherd dogs, is not surprisingly from Belgium where it originated in the late 1800s. However, the breed was first officially recognized and registered in the Belgian Kennel Club in 1991. Later, in 1974, the four varieties Groenendael, Laekenois, Tervueren and Malinois, as we know it today, were adopted. The name Malinois comes from the areas of Malines and Mechelen, which are cities in the Belgian province of Antwerp, where the breed was then particularly prevalent among the locals. At the time, it was used as a service dog.

The activity level of the breed

Malinois is a very active dog breed that loves to move, be active and solve tasks, preferably of increasing difficulty. Due to the breed's great joy of being active, it is particularly suitable for agility competitions and similar disciplines. However, the breed can also easily function as a family dog, as long as you just make sure to employ and activate the dog sufficiently so that it does not get bored. Some will argue that the dog is not suitable as a family dog, but it is really just a matter of raising and shaping the dog properly. A well-trained and well-behaved Malinois that is activated and employed every day, can easily make a good family dog, also for children. It is also a dog that requires a lot of obedience training, which you can start with when the dog is a puppy. It is therefore not a dog that is suitable for inexperienced owners. An uneducated Malinois, after all, can be something of a mouthful. Therefore, if you are considering acquiring a Malinois, you should be aware that it is a breed that requires daily activation, exercise and employment. It is not a breed that can just settle for a single or two small walks a day or that you can just let out in the garden, and then the dog can otherwise play by himself. The dog should preferably have daily tasks, which should be challenging. There are no tasks that are more suitable than others for the dog. As long as it just gets a chance to use its nose and its other senses while getting some good exercise.

Fur care and hygiene

Malinois is, as mentioned earlier, a short-haired variant of the Belgian Shepherd Dog. Therefore, its fur is far from as demanding to care for as some of the long-haired varieties. Therefore, it is a dog that is easy to keep in your everyday life. If the dog is only brushed once in a while as needed, that is usually enough.

Health and disease

Malinois are a breed that can develop hip and elbow problems. However, it is relatively rare, but still something you, as the owner, should be aware of, so you can prevent any problems. In general, the breed is healthy and fit, due to its long history as a working dog, which has made it solid, robust and hardy. In other words, it is not a dog that tends to fragil. Although the dog is very similar in appearance to the German Shepherd, which is also descended from the Belgian Shepherd Dog, Malinois has far from as many defects and health problems as the German Shepherd. If you are looking for a Malinois, however, it is important that you research the breeder thoroughly to ensure that he has bred the breed correctly with a focus on creating healthy dogs, both physically and mentally.
