Background knowledge of the breed

A Dachshund is a fantastic dog breed that you just can not help but love unconditionally. A Dachshund is very active and energetic when it is out. However, it is a different matter when the dog is indoors, as it is calm and loves to spend time in the company of its family. The breed is very intelligent, and despite its small size, a Dachshund always has a great personality. The breed is independent by nature and slightly fearless. In any case, it does not know how small it really is. The breed is originally a hunting dog, which also works as a nice family dog today, but it still possesses a hunting desire.

The breed has a distinct and well-developed great need to use its nose, and therefore it loves tasks where it is allowed to use its nose and sniff for things. In addition to this, the breed also needs an early socialization with other animals, a good social life with a lot of human contact and, last but not least, regular exercise to avoid being overweight, which can be a big nuisance to it due to its small size.

The breed probably originated in the Middle Ages, given that the German low-legged dog has been affected by chondrodystrophy, a hereditary dwarfism in the long tubular bones. However, this handicap quickly proved to be a strength. In addition to their original task as driving hunting dogs, they became well-suited to also work underground where through provocations from changing places, but without attack, they provoke the fox to leave the grave. The Dachshunds are still used for grave hunting, drive hunting and as welding dogs, which detect injured game. The three sizes are created through selective breeding on smaller specimens. They are classified on the basis of breast size, measured after the dog is 15 months old.

The breed is available in three hair layers: short-haired, long-haired and wire-haired. The breed is also available in three sizes: miniature, rabbit and standard.

Miniature: Measures up to 30 cm in breast circumference and weighs a few kg.

Rabbit: Measures between 30 and 35 cm in breast circumference, and weighs 4-5 kg.

Standard: Measures over 35 cm in chest circumference with a weight limit of about 9 kg.

The activity level of the breed

The breed is created to work independently underground without the help of its owner and also as a driving hunting dog very far away from its handler, so one can quickly conclude that a Dachshund is a distinct hunting dog that has many talents. The desire to hunt is still pronounced even after many generations as a companion dog and family dog. If you want to be able to walk with your dog without a leash and be sure that it comes when called. The breed requires early and thorough learning, otherwise, it can be quite an impossible task if it is not trained early enough in its life. It is important not to hide the fact that obedience is not exactly the Dachshund's core competence.

Fur care and hygiene

The Dachshund, subordinate in size, is available in different fur variants: The short-haired variant, which requires only insignificant care and is easy to see. The rough-haired variant, which requires regular brushing and trimming a couple of times a year - often you can learn to do it yourself, otherwise, you can seek help from a professional. The long-haired variant that needs a weekly brushing and hairdressing. It is possible to mate freely across the size variants, while there is a ban on crossing between the hair layer variants, and you must therefore be aware of this if you want to breed on the breed.

Management of the breed

A Dachshund is a wonderful and lovely dog, which is quite easy to motivate, but the interest can be difficult to maintain if there is not enough variation in its life. The learning must be done in short sessions, but several times daily. Remember to include a friendly tone in training, otherwise, it can be difficult to raise the dog.
