Buy Lhasa Apso

Lhasa Apsos are small dogs with long fur that originate from Tibet. They are sometimes called "lion dogs" because of the male lion-like mane. The breed was bred in Tibet for hundreds of years and was used by Buddhist monks to protect their temples while they were away praying. Even today, the breed is still used by many monastic communities throughout Asia for the same purpose. The dog can often be found in monasteries or in houses belonging to Buddhist priests, who take care of them as valuable possessions.

Appearance and care of the Lhasa Apso

On average, Lhasa Apsos get to be around 11 years old, but some live up to 15 years old. Lhasa Apsos, due to their fur and genes, tend to have some health issues related to their eyes and ears. The Lhasa Apso also suffers from skin problems due to allergies caused by the environment they live in, including cigarette smoke, by us and the like. Therefore, one must consider carefully whether one can afford this breed in the long run or whether one’s home environment is suitable for the breed. The breed is a small robust size with lots of fur. It is characterized by the fact that the coat covers almost all areas, including paws, ears and tail. It has an undercoat, but mostly overcoat, which is long and has a slightly hard quality. It is important that the coat is brushed through and possibly trimmed so that the dog has great freedom of movement. They are easy to care for with regular brushing, but they lose a lot of hair, so daily care is necessary during periods when they shed. The coat must never restrain the dog in its movement.

A Lhasa Apso is seen in several different colors, which can either stand alone or be mixed. The colors are:

• Golden

• Honey

• Sand

• Smoke

• Slate

• Multicolored

The dog's eyes are always dark and one must not be able to see the whites of the eyes, according to the general standards of the breed. The face of Lhasa Apso must not be too flat. Its nose must be black and the mouth must have a real scissor bite. Lhasa Apso also have a characteristic curved tail, which curls over the back to touch or even cross the spine - this gives them their name, as Lha means "temple" and Sos means "dog". It is a fairly small dog that grows to a maximum of 25 cm. A real companion dog that is easy to carry.

Mind and activity level

Lhasa Apsos are very intelligent and easy to train. The Lhasa Apso will adapt well to city life as pets and has therefore become a more common breed in the UK. It requires moderate exercise at least once a day, e.g. long walks or play in the yard or in the park. The breed may be reserved because it is so intelligent. They were originally bred to be watch dogs, which is why they will bark at strangers and be on guard. The breed needs socialization when they are puppies, so they do not become reserved or stubborn with age. Since they are mostly used as companion dogs today, it is an important training to give them from the start.

If this breed is in its proper environment with people it is comfortable with, it will be a cheerful and playful dog that can provide plenty of laughter and entertainment. It is very affectionate towards its owner and loves treats, therefore it is also recommended that you keep an eye on its weight, as you will risk the dog being overweight. The dog may tend to be very stubborn and may be reserved towards strangers, but Lhasa Apsos are also cheerful, attentive and very confident dogs. The breed tends to be loud dogs, which can sometimes lead to them having an excessive amount of barking to the great annoyance of many. Lhasa Apsos need consistent training from when they are puppies to strengthen their temperament, so that they become more sociable. This breed is known for its ability to get along well with children, even when things can get a little wild, it is very patient.

The Lhasa Apso as a family dog

If you buy a Lhasa Apso, you should expect a very contact-seeking dog, as it is by nature a social companion dog. The Lhasa Apso loves to be with its owner and therefore it is important that you feel like spending time with it, so that it feels seen and its social needs are met. It is therefore also ideal to have the dog in the home with children and when guests come, as Lhasa Apsos thrive with company around them. However, the dog must be socialized before, so that it is used to strangers from the start. The Lhasa Apsos needs a leader to feel safe, secure and stable at all times. This breed will not thrive if allowed to take control, so early obedience training from puppy age and onwards is crucial. They tend to be very gentle and sociable dogs that love to be with both children and adults. The Lhasa Apsos like to sit on your lap or next to you, either on the couch or at your feet.
