A Large Münsterländer is a happy and very active hunting dog, which is really calm at home and restrained in the environment it lives in. A Large Münsterländer is very attentive and as well as slightly vigilant in some cases but, in general, the dog is very friendly, sociable and positive towards the family adults and children. The Large Münsterländer needs exercise as well as meaningful challenges and tasks, and has a very great need for closeness and contact with its people. It is a very keen retriever and it just loves water! The Großer as it is very often called, has the same background as the German Longhair and has genes dating back to the Middle Ages and recent times Bird Dogs, Water Dogs and Shepherd Dogs such as the Wachtelhund as well as the English pointers and setters. At the beginning of the 20th century, the black and white variant was removed from the breeding of the Long-haired Chicken Dog, and, in 1919, a breeding association for the black-and-white long-haired chicken dog also called Large Münsterländer was established and named after the area where most of the original German pedigrees were.
Males will grow to about 60-65 cm, and females 58-63 cm. The body length and shoulder height of the dogs should be as similar as possible. The body length can exceed the shoulder height by 2 cm, and the dogs can weigh about 28 - 35 kg.
The Large Münsterländer is a super versatile hunting dog that works independently, and who masters all aspects of hunting to perfection! It is really good at standing, it is track-safe and an excellent retriever, and even though it is fast and moves at a medium distance, it actually generally keeps good contact with its owner. It has a huge desire to hunt, which can be easily controlled through training if you are persistent in working with it.
The coat is dense, smooth, contiguous and it effectively protects against most kinds of weather. It must not be too full or too short. The fur care is clear but regular trimming of the legs and tail can be recommended so filtering is avoided, as this is a nuisance for the dog.
The Large Münsterländer is easy to raise, and very teachable and cooperative, and should preferably be socialized early with other people and dogs. It can be trained throughout life with lots of kindness and consistency. It loves to retrieve, so the exercise can be used as an extra reward when it deserves it.
