Background knowledge of the breed

The breed is a relatively calm dog breed, and it is also known as one of Scandinavia's living treasures. However, the breed is known for its calm and gentle nature, which makes it a comfortable family dog when it is with active people who can manage to keep the dog as it should now be kept. The Lapponian Herder tends to bark, and it simply stems from its shepherd instinct, as it is bred to drive thousands of reindeer away across the snow, and therefore it must be able to bark loud and clear. A Lapponian Herder has a guard instinct that makes it want to bark when someone comes by, and it can be a bit inhibiting for a future owner if you want this breed. Therefore, it is necessary to teach the dog when it is allowed to bark already from when it is a puppy, and when it certainly must not bark. However, the breed also possesses a whole range of good qualities, and it is indulgent and tolerant of children, and it simply loves to play. When it comes to strangers and dogs, it is confident, tolerant and relaxed if it feels safe in the company. The breed is certainly not a companion dog as it is a dog that needs to be activated and used. It must have a lot of outdoor exercise and many opportunities to solve tasks in close collaboration with its people. It simply will not thrive on a daily life where it can not run free of its energy.

This breed originates from the Sami's ancient reindeer herders, however, possibly crossed with different polar draft dogs. By the middle of the 20th century, the mixing with other breeds had become so great that the dog was almost useless for its original work. Also, at same time, many of the Sami preferred the snowmobile as a working tool when the reindeer were to be collected. However, an active and targeted breeding program in Finland and Sweden ensured that the breed's ability to work, strength and temperament were rebuilt and preserved. It is worth knowing that some dogs of this breed may be reserved towards strangers and this is not seen as a mistake. The females are often more humble than the male dogs. However, this can be kept in check, if you just make sure that the dog is socialized sufficiently as a puppy.

The breed grows to 49-55 cm with a weight of 15-25 kg.

The activity level of the breed

In the wild, you will find that the breed is extremely active, energetic and enduring. Indoors, however, the breed is calm and relaxed when otherwise well stimulated. By keeping it activated regularly and meeting its needs, you will have a quite calm and relaxed dog at home. It is not a breed that is stressed easily, and it is extremely good at remaining focused. The breed is very attached to its family and it will protect its family at all times.

Fur care and hygiene

The breed's very strong coat consists of coarse, long cover hairs, which cover the fine and thick undercoat that the breed has. The breed sheds twice a year and it is necessary to brush it often, otherwise, it is a self-cleaning coat that does not require brushing on a daily basis. The coat protects very well against all kinds of wind and weather.

Management of the breed

Lapponian Herder, which should not be mistaken, possesses job satisfaction and willingness to cooperate, but it also has the independence of the Pointed dogs from the polar. The breed is generally responsive and easy to raise, and the upbringing rarely causes big problems. If it is trained kindly, consistently and varied, it is suitable for many kinds of dog sports, and you will have a friend for life.
