Lagotto Romagnolo is a curly, long-haired dog breed from Italy. The name refers to its fur, which is said to look like a little hare. It has been compared to the Welsh Corgi Pembroke and Dachshund. They are also known as comigial dogs - meaning "duck dogs", because their flippers make them excellent swimmers. Lagotto Romagnolo is an ancient breed that dates back to about 850 years ago. There are two theories about how the dog originated. One theory is that they are descended from Tibetan dogs that the Roman army brought to Italy, while another theory is that they were developed by monks who crossed local water dogs with various other breeds. The name "Lagotto" is derived from the Italian word for "little hare", which was used because of their fur, which resembles the fur of a hare. Although no evidence has yet been found, many believe that these dogs were once used to hunt badgers, as their fur also made them look a bit like a badger when wet.
When you find a Lagotto Romagnolo for sale, you can expect to end up with a medium-sized dog that will weigh up to 16 kg. as an adult. The average height of a male dog is approximately 32-37 cm, while the female is on average a little shorter at 29-33 cm. These furry little creatures come in three different colors - brown, white and crisp. They have a single layer of fur, which is not very thick, but is still quite warm! The only part of their body that does not have fur is the nose.
Their almond-shaped eyes usually match the color of their fur, and brown or black is the one most recognized for the breed. Their ears are half drooping (not quite like in other dog breeds) and fall down over the eyes when relaxed. When an alert Lagotto Romagnola feels threatened, it will lift its ears straight up at a tip to make them look bigger. They can easily adapt to both hot and cold weather conditions. Their coat is very hardy, but folds easily when wet. So it takes a lot of time every day just to brush its coat, and it is important to take into consideration when finding this breed for sale.
Lagotto Romagnolos are extremely intelligent dogs that are easy to train. They excel at any activity that involves swimming or hunting, but they are also excellent pets, because they are friendly to children, adults and other animals. Although they were originally bred as hunting dogs, the instinct is so subdued that they are not suitable as guard or hunting dogs today. However, their sense of direction is still intact and that makes them excellent dogs for fetching games. They are also still used in many places in Italy to find truffles.
Lagotto Romagnolo can very easily go from being a first class swimmer to a first class tumbler dog. They are excellent running companions for people who enjoy jogging or cycling. This breed loves to play ball and will hunt for frisbees with great enthusiasm.
Lagotto Romagnolos is loving to children and welcomes strangers. They love their families to the end of their days and will fit in with most. This dog is very sociable and loyal and only barks when it feels the need to warn its owner about something. They do not require much exercise and will often prefer to play with their owner or other dogs instead, but must be exercised for a minimum of 30 minutes a day and like to have the opportunity to play more than that.
When looking for a Lagotto Romagnolo for sale, there are many things you should consider before buying such an animal. Because they are such good swimmers, never leave your dog unattended near water, because they will often jump relentlessly in. In addition, they usually eat everything too, which makes it a dog that requires a lot of attention from its owner. Lagotto Romagnolo is the only so-called water dog in the world whose fur does not reject water; instead, it absorbs up to 30% of its own weight in water, making it almost completely waterproof! This makes them excellent swimmers and able to work for hours without getting tired. Before buying a Lagotto Romagnolo for sale, consider what lifestyle you have and whether you want to invest in such an animal. If you like to spend a lot of time outside swimming, jogging and playing ball, then Lagotto Romagnolo will be a great addition to your family.
The most important thing when looking at this breed for sale, is to make sure they are healthy and not too overweight - they should look muscular and feel free to talk to the breeder about choosing the correct food for it.
